@LordoftheDeep1 He writes that abstract labour (the expenditure of labour-power) is the substance of value, yes. It is only socially determined as the substance of value in the historically specific case where value exists (capitalism). This doesn't mean labour-power wasn't expended before.

Nice to see some people are still (wrongly) arguing that abstract labour must be historically specific (the capitalist form of labour is, abstract labour isn't), or that since Marx defined it as expenditure of labour-power, then all expenditure would create value (it doesn't).

@LordoftheDeep1 The expenditure of labour-power (AL) is content, not form, and Marx says what specific social form this content is given under capitalism, and that form is the equal value objectivity of commodities, not labour.

@LordoftheDeep1 There's no question there is a social form of labour! Especially since we're specifically talking about exchange-value here. The capital-labour relation, and generalized exchange, are not identical to the expenditure of labour-power.

@M_Gouldhawke Marx isn't talking about a mental abstraction - labour in general - but a real activity that produces this abstraction. Of course, one can conceive of something in general, but that's not his point in thus instance
