Decided to have a real look at Midnight ($NIGHT). 🧵 Basically, Midnight is a sidechain designed to act as a privacy layer for Cardano, Bitcoin, and several major chains. It stands out in three ways: multichain integration, selective disclosure, and the tokenomics of DUST and NIGHT. The entire supply was airdropped to tens of millions of addresses across several major chains - primarily Cardano (50%), then Bitcoin (20%), and then the rest. The NIGHT tokens are claimed on Cardano as CNTs, but can be bridged to Midnight directly, where they act as staking tokens providing economic security to the network. What's cool is this: you don't need NIGHT per se to pay gas on the network. Rather, network fees are paid in DUST - a non-transferable network resource passively accumulated by NIGHT holders proportional to their holdings. New DUST is generated in perpetuity, but auto-expires after thirty days. This is a clever model: it allows an easy way for dapps and marketplaces to sponsor user transactions forever with a base of their own NIGHT holdings. Users of all chains don't need to buy another gas token, and the NIGHT token doesn't need to be inflated to make it accessible. It also promotes "rational privacy." The NIGHT supply and transactions are public from day 1, making the token viable for listing on public exchanges. Midnight transactions are private by default, hiding senders, receivers, balances, transaction amounts, and token types. However, with ZKPs, users can selectively prove certain facts about their data, like age verification, sufficient collateral, or transaction validity. This ensures the dapp ecosystem remains open for applications that require transparency and that seek to fulfill regulatory needs. @effectfully @KpunToN00b @effectfully , I understand why this case rang alarm bells with you. I also understand that if we assume no ill intent whatsoever, and this truly was an unfortunate accident, it was not an on-site accident, but a private one, so to speak.

Just submitted my resignation letter. I've fucked up pen testing in a major way once. I've seen my colleagues do the same. I didn't realize there was a risk of getting raided by the authorities because of that + saying mean things on the Internet. If the Cardano community wants me to continue securing the computational layer, it's gonna need to compensate me handsomely for the risk I had no idea I was taking on. For context, most vulns in the computational layer were either directly discovered by me or originated from my ideas.

@JaromirTesar Our law may be code, but code by default is constantly vulnerable, there's no such thing as 100% security. Not saying processes can't be improved. Risk can be reduced to converge to 0, but it can never reach it. As such, we must ensure a fallback exists, cant rely on code alone.

Does blockchain need lawyers to ensure security? One of the strongest narratives of Cardano is that formal methods and peer review were used in its development. In theory, we are building the most robust chain in crypto. And fortunately, this has been confirmed. One malicious transaction caused *serious* problems. The largest blockchain fork in Cardano’s history occurred. The orphaned chain had over 800 blocks. However, Cardano did not stop. The consequences could have been more serious. This was a critical threat to the chain. Before we point fingers at Homer J, we should ask how this is possible and what is wrong with our processes, development, and quality assurance. This is now the task of Intersect and IOG. They have our trust and are well paid to ensure security. I have been in crypto for a long time, so I remember a time when teams invited hackers to come and try to break their chain. The best chains must survive. The rest do not deserve to be a global financial operating system. Period. Homer J could have disclosed the team’s vulnerability privately. Instead, he chose to damage the Cardano main chain. Many people had to deal with the consequences for hours. Some people could have lost money in DeFi. The reputational risk was high. It makes sense that Homer J should face the consequences. Is the FBI an adequate response? I’m not sure about that. The president of the United States launches meme coins and robs millions of people without having to face the consequences. Dozens of others do it every day. Teams that raised millions to develop projects walk away with a bundle of money. They just say goodbye in a single tweet. No one can hold them accountable. In this context, I find it a bit inappropriate to punish someone for sending a malicious transaction. Luckily, I’m in a comfortable position where I don’t have to decide that. If anyone thinks the FBI is an adequate response, I’m not going to stop anyone from doing so. My point of view is that blockchain should not need third parties, and certainly not states and lawyers, to ensure security. Our law is code. Let's focus on making sure that a similar incident does not happen again in the future. We need to improve our processes. We need to accelerate the development of alternative node implementations like Amaru. That is our priority. In the blockchain world, Homer J can be easily punished because he is an SPO and a DRep. People can delegate elsewhere. That is a fairly strong punishment. I leave it to you to decide whether it is sufficient.

Homer is a respected community member/SPO(unless you're Pey or Holger and now Charles..). Anyone who has watched him operate over the years would say he would never purposefully attack the network and testing something like this is what he does every day.

So you saw something on testnet, which broke the testnet and then you made it YOUR PERSONAL challenge to try to break our live/mainnet-chain? WOW, then i guess it is okay, right? After seeing that someone destroys dummy-targets on a shooting range - he made it his personal challenge to shoot living people... The classic, "let's see if they die too"-Challenge?! B) "to rely on AI's instructions on how to block all traffic in/out of my Linux server without properly testing it on testnet first, and then watched in horror as the last block time on explorers froze" Hahaha, the guy using linux on a daily-basis, creating code which runs on linux for SPOs, does not know how to block outgoing traffic with the built-in firewall tools? And on top of that with AI instructions he was not able to do so? What a liar! We are not talking about crazy nftables/iptables rules, we are talking about: sudo ufw default deny outgoing Tada!! I never worked, with the guy, i never had any interactions with him. So there is not really a reason why someone would keep attacking and provoking me.... other than a real sick mindset and/or another personal challenge, because he does not like that or how i help other people. But, what happens is, that some of his "coding" buddies have admin/mod-rights in certain channels, who are always there to happily support the bad-actor: He provokes and attacks me till he gets an reaction out of me, and in the moment I respond to his BS, I am the bad-guy, and his mod-friends talking shit to me or want to punish me for speaking up. They saw everything, what he said to me - all good no problem. I am just not allowed to defend myself. Why I say this, am i not man enough to handle it when someone attacks and provokes me in a huge channel with 3000 people?
