Students from Barnstable High School joined us last week for the High School Discovery Program at the MBL. During their CRISPR genome editing course, they used SyGlass virtual reality headsets to explore and visualize confocal microscopy data.

This polychromatic polarizing microscope image of 0.3µ thick calcite film shows real colors, as it is seen by naked eye. The vibrant colors are produced as the calcite crystals form, revealing their molecular orientation. #MicroscopyMonday

Cyanobacteria isolated from desert "microbiotic" crust soil. Senior scientist Zoe Cardon's group is exploring how these tiny green algae and cyanobacteria can completely dry out in deserts and then opportunistically pop back to activity when a raindrop hits. #MicroscopyMonday
