Reminds me of a true story, from the time of George VI. Police officer posted to the garden at Buck House leaves his post and goes for a little wander. After a short while he hets back to his post and there's King G himself stood outside the box. King G asks the copper, "Are you..." To which the copper replies (somewhat shakily it has to be said), "Yes sir". King G smiles and says, "Great, ... has just rung and asked me to pass on a message, he say's you're to watch yourself as he's about". 🤣

14 year old kid in my neighborhood came by my house. Very sharp. Polite, “Yes Sir” and “No Sir”. Business card and everything. Offered to power wash, soap, and clean out my garbage cans. $25/can. During my adult life I've had several careers, one of which was driving a milk lorry (a delivery truck, for you Yanks!). One of my stops was the Royal School for the Blind in Liverpool. When I realized that there were people on the staff whom I had known when I was growing up, I asked if there were anything I could do to help the kids? I felt, I suppose, that children are the most defenseless beings in the world; they have no power, no money, no political lobby. And to be deaf or blind made them even more defenseless. It was suggested that I might want to come and read to the children once a week, and I agreed. The books I was given to read were about dark subjects — alcoholic parents, teen-age pregnancy, drug abuse — all perfectly horrid and depressing. The children didn't like the books very much and I positively hated them. I wanted to give them the sense of adventure that I had when a boy, reading Robinson Crusoe or Treasure Island. Something that could take them out of themselves and their situation. So I went home and decided to write a story about defenseless mice — there's no creature on earth more helpless than a mouse, is there? I thought the children could identify with a mouse, and I also knew that I had to make the action of the story fast and furious to keep their interest. It had to be highly descriptive so that the children would be able to 'see' the story in their minds as much as they were able. Well, a published author, a friend of mine, read the raw manuscript and without my knowledge sent it to a London publisher and the Redwall books were born."

🦔A researcher invented a fake eye condition called bixonimania, uploaded two obviously fraudulent papers about it to an academic server, and watched major AI systems present it as real medicine within weeks. The fake papers thanked Starfleet Academy, cited funding from the Professor Sideshow Bob Foundation and the University of Fellowship of the Ring, and stated mid-paper that the entire thing was made up. Google's Gemini told users it was caused by blue light. Perplexity cited its prevalence at one in 90,000 people. ChatGPT advised users whether their symptoms matched. The fake research was then cited in a peer-reviewed journal that only retracted it after Nature contacted the publisher. My Take The researcher made the papers as obviously fake as possible on purpose. The AI systems didn't catch it. Neither did the human researchers who cited it in real journals, which means people are feeding AI-generated references into their work without reading what they're actually citing. I've covered the FDA using AI for drug review, the NYC hospital CEO ready to replace radiologists, and ChatGPT Health launching this year. All of that is happening in the same environment where a condition funded by a Simpsons character and endorsed by the crew of the Enterprise was being presented as emerging medical consensus. The people making these deployment decisions seem to believe the pipeline from research to AI to patient is more supervised than it actually is.
