Mount Washington Observatory (MWOBS)

Yesterday, temperatures on the summit of Mount Washington dropped 53 degrees F over the course of 24 hours, from 43 degrees above to 10 below! Rain across the higher terrain were quickly replaced by inches of rime ice, as captured by summit intern and photographer Ryan Steinke.

Happy St. Paddy's Day from the summit of Mount Washington! The summit crew celebrated the holiday this morning with winds gusting over 100 mph, and Nimbus has spent the day so far digging for gold (chicken pâté fancy feast) at the end of the rainbow! 🌈🍀🐾

This new snow combined with gusts over 100 mph to take the summits from almost completely bare to heavily drifted, which observers discovered when they opened the door to collect the precipitation can at sunrise this morning!

After record breakingly warm temperatures this past week melted most of the summit's snowpack, almost 7 inches of new snowfall were deposited over the course of this weekend's storm!

There are only 5 other similar streaks in our record since 1932 that match or beat this streak (For record highs: January 15th-20th of 1995, March 18th-22nd of 2012, April 9th-13th of 1945, September 1st-5th of 1999; For record lows: December 16th-21st of 1942).

As of March 11th, summit temperatures were averaging 12.4 F above average for the month. Perhaps the most remarkable statistic from this streak is that 5 of 6 consecutive days have at least a share of the daily high temperature record (either tied or set). (3/4)

Between March 7th and the morning of March 12th, the summit experienced a remarkable stretch of record breaking temperatures, setting 4 new daily record highs and tying a 5th, reaching a maximum temperature of 45F late on March 11th. (1/4)

Summit staff enjoyed a great view of a partial undercast yesterday evening. A strong storm will bring warm, wet, and windy conditions to the higher summits on Saturday, with 100+ mph wind gusts and temperatures in the 40s possible.

The summit saw the beginning of this morning's total lunar eclipse before clouds settled in at around the same time as totality. This photo was snapped by staff meteorologist Ryan Knapp just before sunrise this morning!
