@DanKretzer @DieinPlace I think it’s a cultural stigma about appearing “poor” by doing something like saving money. From my understanding it’s mostly upper middle class people with this mentality. Real rich people while not caring about cost, they wouldn’t say no to saving money.

Most urban dwellers performatively despise the trappings of suburbia or rural America. But you go into any Walmart or Costco in suburban LA and it's packed with snobby urban elite getting their cheap goodies.
