To demonstrate this, we employed fully classical (molecular dynamics) and diffusive-timescale (phase field crystal - example below) atomistic simulations and interpreted the results using Markov-chain Monte Carlo. We then obtained confirmation by targeted experiments!

New in @ScienceMagazine our work "Grain boundaries are Brownian ratchets"🤩 We dived very deep into grain boundary (GB) kinetics and emerged with refining our understanding of how interfaces in polycrystals migrate and can be controlled #ScienceResearch

Out in #PNAS our work on the emergence of #hyperuniformity (HU) in #active #fluids. We used #continuum #modeling and connected HU to #active #turbulence, with implications for physical and biological systems. ⬇️

The paper on the characterization of topology in #hyperuniform #patterns is now published in @PhysRevResearch 👇. Via #persistent #homology and #local #topological #neighborhoods, we unveiled key aspects for their detection, inverse design, and analysis/interpretation.

2/3 We devised a #continuum model for (multi-mode) interface disconnections (steps with dislocation character), reproducing atomistic simulation results. We also recast it in a simple phenomenological (Cahn-Taylor) model.

1/3 Our latest #research on fundamental mechanisms for #polycrystals (like most inorganic solids🪨) has been published in @PNASNews. We've uncovered that grain rotation in these materials follows from #disconnection flow during interface migration✨

We connected #gradient-#elasticity to the theory of order-disorder phase transition arxiv.org/abs/2312.08154
This follows from #Swift-#Hohenberg and #phase-#field #crystal models and completes the analysis of the elasticity naturally encoded therein! @TUD_Science @dcmsdresden
