Something new for me: I am taking part in the Hampton Court Half Marathon on Sunday 23rd March and raising money for @crisis_uk a national charity addressing homelessness. Your donations would make a big difference. Thank you! justgiving.com/page/martin-la…

Controversial COVID study that promoted unproven treatment retracted after four-year saga nature.com/articles/d4158… Ironic that the co-authors complain they were “victims of cyber-harassment” - they should try being on the receiving end of HCQ believers, including Raoult himself.

@drrichjlaw And a reminder that the first treatment we showed to reduce COVID deaths was dexamethasone - generic and at a cost of about £5/$10 per patient.

@MartinLandray I expect much like vaccines & autism, horse dewormer, & other similar bs, the retraction will merely serve to convince the idiocracy of a pharma profits deep state conspiracy against them and possibly increase the use of hydroxychloroquine to treat covid!

Extraordinary: Raoult’s damaging paper on hydroxychloroquine for COVID-19 finally retracted. So grateful to all the people who helped with the RECOVERY trial, allowing us to debunk the myth of hydroxychloroquine for severe COVID-19 science.org/content/articl…

Influenza going up in the UK. For those involved in the RECOVERY trial of influenza treatments - please try to enrol patients. If this season is short and sharp, we will have a limited time window for recruitment.

@TheLancet Some years later I got to meet and work with Terje Pedersen on some of my own trials. He was kind, supportive and generous to a young clinical academic. And I’m enormously grateful for that. (Oh, the other trial that inspired me: ISIS-2 of course thelancet.com/journals/lance…). 2/2

@TheLancet 4S: I remember my boss, a recently appointed cardiology consultant, coming on to the ward flourishing @TheLancet in excitement. One of two trials that ignited a lifelong interest in the power of great trials to transform clinical practice. 1/2

@adiosmuchachos4 @fastercures I’d put it differently - involvement of the public (in all its glorious varieties) is crucial for this to succeed - and listening is every bit as important as talking.

Also from the @fastercures conference: Regulation (clinical trials, AI and more) must: 1. Protect patients and participants from harm (I’d argue that harm can only be considered in context of benefit) 2. Preserve flexibility for discovery, innovation and entrepreneurship.

@adiosmuchachos4 @fastercures Agree. But that’s one of the reasons why facilitating the generation of reliable evidence is so important. Evidence on its own is not sufficient. But without it everything is misinformation.

@MartinLandray @fastercures There is now so much misinformation to fight as well. It just makes it all the more difficult.

And for the principles of good regulation take a look at goodtrials.org where we set out what good guidance should look like - scientific & ethical principles - concise - co-developed with breadth of expertise & experience - versatile to suit a broad range of contexts
