Whooping cough notifications are up on last year but still well below pre-covid levels. Pre-covid infections were higher than the prior decade. This is my article in the Conversation theconversation.com/whooping-cough…

@LongDesertTrain @lasradoN I suspect it hasn't "spread across the world in a flash" but been building in Africa for several weeks ? South Africa and then seeded multiple countries from there.

...somehow, BA.2.86 has spread across the world in a flash, despite inferior nAb evasion & ostensibly miserable infectivity. What gives? It seems as if "something deeply hidden" must be lurking beneath the surface. But what? Thanks, @lasradoN! h/t @seanmcarroll 2/2

Some great new nAb data from @BarouchLab and.... BA.2.86 looks like a big loser once again! Frankly, based on the data we have gotten so far, BA.2.86 looks like it should've died in the cradle, strangled by the vastly stronger superior XBB lineages. Yet... 1/

Now on to the data. We analyzed NAb titers in ~44 participants who received the Bivalent mRNA boosters. BA.2.86 had ~5-13 fold lower NAb titers than BA.2, but comparable titers to XBB.1.5, EG.5.1, FL.1.5.1 variants. Note that EG.5.1 and FL.1.5.1 had substantially reduced NAbs!!!

"The occurrence of Legionella spp. in high numbers in drinking water supplies is preventable through implementation of basic water quality management measures" WHO Guide to Ship Sanitation. So a well known risk that should have been prevented. who.int/publications/i…

I remember reading this paper almost 20 years ago and it shows why we need to be cautious about even usually short infection tranmsission chains in mammals as with avian flu nature.com/articles/natur…

This review shows why maintaining covid supression (delays infection) after vaccination leads to more severe disease (hospitalisation and death - Figure 3) as as seen in China thelancet.com/journals/lanin…

Last week of 2022 Omicron XBB.1.5 estimated at 40.5% of infections in U.S but this estimate has been revised down to just 18.3%. Still growing but a lot less rapidly than originally thought cnb.cx/3GLmvEr

A repeat of the CDC study on mask mandates in schools and covid using a rather bigger dataset than previously. After the first few weeks no real difference in paediatric case rates journalofinfection.com/article/S0163-…
