On March 17, 2026, our commissioners elected new officers. They will begin 2-year terms in their new roles on March 27, 2026. We would like to thank our current officers for their guidance and leadership and congratulate our newly elected officers!

We will hold our next public meeting on April 14, 2026.

Chair Hart: Each Metrorail actionable item completed during implementation of a CAP improves the system’s safety. The WMSC continues to monitor the effectiveness of these safety mitigations even after a CAP is closed.

Chair Hart: The WMSC approved for closure 44 corrective action plans in 2025. These corrective action plans were designed to address safety concerns identified during WMSC oversight activities.

Chair Hart: These audits identify positive practices and opportunities for safety improvement that the WMSC requires Metrorail to address to ensure that Metrorail is following its safety management system commitments specified in its Public Transportation Agency Safety Plan.

The WMSC issued four audit reports and conducted work on three additional safety audits in 2025 issued or to be issued in 2026.

The rule established minimum safety standards to prevent safety events, injuries, and fatalities to transit workers who may access the roadway to perform their duties.

In 2025, the WMSC also approved WMATA’s new roadway worker protection program as required by Federal Transit Administration rule 49 CFR part 671.

Chair Hart: We continue to oversee WMATA’s automation efforts, by routinely providing our safety concerns and feedback, and attending testing, demonstrations, workshops and meetings.

Chair Hart: Our ongoing, robust safety oversight helped ensure that Metrorail properly completed its safety certification process to activate Automatic Train Operations on each line in the system.

Chair Hart: We continued our oversight work in 2025 to help Metrorail achieve substantial safety improvements through ongoing collaboration, safety audits, inspections, safety certification oversight, safety event investigations, and other work.
