Markers of Thyroid function
Most important:
Body temp immediately after waking(98 degrees) and 30 mins after first meal. (98.2 or above)
Morning temp can be influenced by stress hormones so we take both here. If you wake up at 98 degrees or higher then drop below after eating we have a problem. Morning Pulse high can confirm this as well along side temp
Recommend taking orally as it helps with longer term compliance and Broda Barnes suggestion was a mercury thermometer under the armpit which takes about 10 minutes each time. Consistency and uniformity mater most.
Pulse: 70-85 bpm
This is highly variable from person to person and depends on aerobic fitness. High school athlete? Ect. Once again consistency and uniformity of measurement matters most.
Markers that help you regain autonomy for your health and give you a much better overall picture outside a single snapshot in time(bloodwork)
-cold hands cold feet (no this isn’t normal if you’re a girl either)
-energy
-mood
-mental function
-libido
-bp
-weight gain
-digestion
-hair/skin/nails
Bloodwork
-TSH
-Free T3 T4
-reverse T3
-cholesterol
This is a crapshoot to read sometimes and don’t feel bad because Doctors get it wrong all the time.
TSH only really relevant if elevated (above 1.4 maybe even lower - hypothyroid). When suppressed then we can look to see t3 & t4. Upper reference range? Great although not the full picture. T3 can be elevated in serum yet depleted in tissue. TSH high T4 high yet t3 lower end? We will likely see rT3 elevated indication hypothyroid. TSH low t3 &t4 low rT3 is most likely elevated.
High Cholesterol isn’t always directly linked to hypothyroidism but it’s a good confirmation. Cholesterol gets backed up because we need t3 to convert it into downstream hormones. 9 out of 10 times I see a high cholesterol on bloods we can bet TSH is above 1.4 and body temp is not ideal.
