Long and strong — this is a little sucker punch, but far from the end of the cycle.

Every time I challenge the direction #Ethereum is taking, I'm told off for being alarmist; nasty towards researchers, etc. So, I have a solution: call "your researcher" now and ask them to explain exactly how they envision the Ethereum network to look like in 5 years.

ECONOMICS > POLITICS No election can pay off America's $175T in debt. Only the printing press can. Because as Elon, Dalio, and others realize...the Western world is headed for a sovereign debt crisis far worse than 2008. Just like they’ve been lying about Biden’s senility, they’ve also been lying about the economy. And so they're going to print a lot of currency. But take a look at the data and judge for yourself. 1) MORE EMERGENCY LOANS THAN 2008 First, did you know the Fed[1] made more emergency loans in 2023 than during the financial crisis of 2008? The banking system is on life support thanks to the US government first selling billions in bonds to financial institutions and then devaluing them with surprise rate hikes. Just look at this graph from the Fed. The blue bump below on the left is the lending from the 2008 crisis — you know, that little old thing. The purple is COVID. And the giant orange/aquamarine monster on the right is the 2023 banking crisis. See how much higher it is than even 2008? 2) MORE BORROWING THAN COVID Second, did you know the US is borrowing more[2] under the "Biden boom" than it did during COVID? Set aside whether a coronavirus should have been treated as a financial crisis. At least the COVID borrowing was at ~0% rates. But today the US government is borrowing historical sums of money in peacetime…and at 5% rates! This is the act of a desperate man maxing out his credit cards to pay his bills. 3) MORE INTEREST THAN DEFENSE Third, did you know that all this borrowing has made interest payments on the national debt the single largest government expense? More than defense, or social security, or anything else[3a, 3b]. The number one thing all tax dollars (and printed dollars) now go towards as of 2024 are payments to bondholders. And even still, anyone who bought US Treasuries (or other bonds) got annihilated over the past few years. For all the warfare and all the welfare, it was buy now pay later. And as you can see from the graph, the time to pay has come. 4) MORE DEVALUATION OF THE DOLLAR Fourth, did you know that the dollar has lost at least 25% of its value in just four years[4a]? This one you probably knew from just your lived experience of inflation. But Larry Summers estimates[4b] that purchasing power has been eroded even more radically than this, with annual numbers hitting 18% if you include the enormous spike in loan payments due to rate hikes. Compounded over four years, that’d be considerably more than 25% of the dollar's value. But wait, there's more. Six more graphs, and references. 👇

ETHEREUM SURVIVES THE SEC. Today we’re happy to announce a major win for Ethereum developers, technology providers, and industry participants: the Enforcement Division of the SEC has notified us that it is closing its investigation into Ethereum 2.0. This means that the SEC will not bring charges alleging that sales of ETH are securities transactions.

Every crypto fund manager who’s survived multiple cycles has learned the same lesson - we need to “touch grass” and maintain healthy physical and mental habits to sustain productivity. It’s a marathon. One thing necessary for that physical and mental health that I was missing for a while was occasional physical “flow state.” I had been a lifelong athlete (never very good, but engaged and passionate) until about 7 years ago. A combination of a herniated disc and entrepreneurship killed my athletic hobbies, and I didn’t realize how much I missed/needed that outlet. Have gotten into rock climbing fairly recently and no matter how stressed I am, struggling to stay on a wall 40 ft up instantly puts me in flow and leaves me physically tired but mentally/emotionally rested.

Today @Uniswap Labs received a Wells notice from the SEC. I’m not surprised. Just annoyed, disappointed, and ready to fight. I am confident that the products we offer are legal and that our work is on the right side of history. But it’s been clear for a while that rather than working to create clear, informed rules, the SEC has decided to focus on attacking long-time good actors like Uniswap and Coinbase. All while letting bad actors like FTX slip by. When I first set out to build Uniswap, the goal wasn’t to reimagine finance. It was an experiment in radically decentralized, fully automated onchain markets. I didn’t know if it would work or if anyone would use it. Fast forward to today, the Uniswap Protocol has processed over $2 trillion in volume. Many thousands of teams and developers have forked our code or built on top of it. We built entirely new financial infrastructure that is transparent, fair, secure, and accessible powering an entire industry. The team at @Uniswap did all of this in the US from our office in New York City. People often ask me why we stay in the US and my answer is simple: I believe that blockchain is incredibly powerful technology. Like the Internet, it’s here to stay. So someone needs to figure it out, and it might as well be us. And that when you build technology that improves people’s lives – you don’t need to hide. The @SEC’s mission is “protecting investors, maintaining fair, orderly, and efficient markets, and facilitating capital formation.” This is a noble mission. I would argue @Uniswap does a far better job of this today than the SEC. Yes, I'm frustrated that the SEC seems to be more concerned with protecting opaque systems than protecting consumers. And that we'll have to fight a US government agency to protect our company and our industry. This fight will take years, may go all the way to the Supreme Court, and the future of financial technology and our industry hangs in the balance. If we stand together we can win. I think freedom is worth fighting for. I think DeFi is worth fighting for. And of course, we won’t stop shipping. Stay tuned 🦄💜
