Let’s call a spade a spade. At the start of Trump 1.0, nearly a decade ago, there were a series of extremely damaging leaks and nothing was ever done about them. It begins with the leak of Michael Flynn’s calls, which effectively got him fired. This would not still be happening if the people responsible back then had faced real consequences and spent serious time in prison. Instead, the message was that you can leak with impunity and nothing will happen. And spare me the Reality Winner stories. She was a low-level, purple haired partisan who leaked something totally trivial and was then held up as proof that the system was working. The whole thing was theater. While she was made into a fake alibi, the truly catastrophic leaks were ignored. Some were not even investigated at all, including the wholly false New York Times report claiming the Trump campaign had coordinated with Russian intelligence, which was the story they started pushing the day after Flynn was fired to open the door to the Mueller investigation.

There’s a fundamental tradeoff for any platform between chasing maximum engagement and surfacing genuinely good content. Right now this platform seems tilted toward whatever drives clicks, even when that means amplifying bad faith posts, outright lies, and low effort ragebait. Maybe there’s a reason to boost lowlifes who cash in on fake outrage, but it’s not obvious. In any case, the result is that the quality of the site degrades. It doesn’t have to be like this. You can allow and host all kinds of trash without actively promoting it.
