Dr. Robert Gunby completely amputated my labia minora, amputated my frenulum, and cut into my clitoris without my consent. When I was 17-barely 18 (surgery within days of my birthday so he would be observing FGM laws), he gave me a fill in the blank consent form. He wrote “excision of redundant labia” in the blank. There were thus no risks on the form and he told me none . When I asked what my labia minora were for, he shrugged. He completely amputated them and cut the frenulum and skin of the clitoral body as well, damaging the nerve supply to the glans. I struggled for so many years to understand what happened to me and how he could have done it. I think he just didn’t pay attention to where my clitoris was at all. When confronted by me, he denied causing damage to my clitoris or frenulum. I had hoped he’d help me get other doctors educated to protect women, but he refused. He also blamed me. This drove me to attempt suicide at 24. When confronted by another doctor I saw, who told him I had scarring in my clitoris, etc., he said I must have had a second surgery. When confronted by my dad, he said maybe I did it to myself. He knew he harmed me. He knew, as proven by how he never did the surgery again. But no, this has nothing to do with trans medicine, other than as an example of how surgeons can do whatever they want with no justice if a recklessly low standard of care is institutionalized.
