Despite the slowed pace of the Russian army’s advancement, the Kremlin sees no reason to halt the fighting. Intelligence officials believe this could escalate into a larger conflict, potentially involving direct confrontations with the U.S. and the use of nuclear weapons. At the beginning of the year, Russia’s army lost more territory than it captured, marking the first time this has happened since November 2023. China’s economic support helps Russia continue weapons production but also makes Russia more dependent on China.
