Practicing using probability language ahead of our field trip. It is impossible for the ION to leave the tracks and drive on the road. It’s certain I don’t have to buckle up on the ION. It’s possible the ION will honk its horn.

Started our Local Community unit with a knowledge building circle and this book. Students talked about communities having fun places, shared places, places that keep us healthy, people helping each other, everyone belongs, different religions…

We explored area of a book today. First job…find the area of a book cover. Second job…find a book with an area that is a little smaller. Third job…find a book with an area in between your two findings.

Measurement Minds On…What can you measure?

After reading “I’m the Biggest Thing in the Ocean” we found 5 objects and ordered them from shortest to tallest.

Here is what we know about measurement…

Thanks wouldyourathermath.com Here’s what we said… left: J - 7 pieces are more than 5 M - saves time you can eat it faster right: S - there is more (5 vs 3 1/2) L - if you cut them in half you would have 10 pieces

T - The one on the left is half. The one on the right is quarters. ** I asked if anyone wanted to challenge this??? After a few minutes the same student said they could both show half.

What is the same? What is different? J - One has a vertical stripe, one is diagonal. M - Both have blue & white. A - Both are rectangles. T - The one on the left is half. The one on the right is quarters. ** L - The white parts are equal.

We started today’s math class with a question to get us thinking…Can a half be big? Here’s what some of us had to say… Yes, our whiteboard is big. That line cuts it in half. That half is big. Yes, half of my TV is big. If the thing you start with is big, the half will be big.

Great thinking happening in Room 16 today… We have 19 students in our class. 3 are away. How many are here? How did you figure it out? P said 16…when I count by threes I go 3, 6, 9…so I thought 9, 6, 3…19, 16.
