Many US districts are using reading curriculum with no books.
The two states bucking that trend, LA + TN, have gains on the NAEP to show for it.
I'm certain we need to give this more attention.
These are the most-used curricula in Louisiana & Tennessee, where curriculum reforms were the first step in successful efforts to raise outcomes.
For all the interest in these states, few are getting into these weeds.
Curriculum reform always incorporates teacher training on the new materials. Curriculum alone isn’t a magic bullet.
But better tools plus training for teachers on how to use them well (and lots of planning time, etc) = an effective pairing.
Beautiful spaces. Beautiful results.
In Portland, ME, schools piloting EL Education’s new K–5 Curriculum (2025 Edition) saw literacy gains 10× the state average—and even greater growth for economically disadvantaged students.
