Cybersecurity feels overwhelming at the start. Most beginners quit before it even clicks. If I had to start all over in 2025 with no mentorship, this is the exact playbook I’d follow step by step 🧵

Honestly, I’ve come to realize the gap between school and industry shocked me a bit. I’ve learned more from asking questions than just trying to sound smart, and turns out curiosity is really what you need.

@gabbytech01 True, it is not only lack of skills, but also lack of direction. That gap is costing people a lot.

The people I pity the most in Nigeria are the youths graduating without a single skill, both digital skill and hard skill . How do you want to cope and survive without being able to offer any service to people?

Today I finally believed the saying: when you’re struggling to figure something out, sometimes the best thing you can do is step away and take a break. Coming back later, things that didn’t make sense before suddenly start to click again.

You can scroll on X and find job postings. But you need to have your portfolio/evidence of work made and visible/easy to see.

@Maskoff023 Everything in cyber runs on it. If you don’t understand IPs, DNS, TCP/IP and the rest, logs will just be confusing numbers and noise.

DON’T SKIP NETWORKING. The internet runs on networking. Cybersecurity runs on networking. Cloud runs on networking. SOC analysis runs on networking. Threat hunting runs on networking. If you skip networking, you’ll struggle to understand what the logs are trying to tell you. Learn: • IP addressing • Subnetting • DNS • TCP/IP • Routing • Switching • VLANs • NAT • VPNs • HTTP/HTTPS DON’T SKIP NETWORKING.

@TemitopeSobulo A lot of people don’t even know the other parts of cybersecurity yet. Most just hear ethical hacking and pentesting, so the confusion is normal.

There is more to cybersecurity than pentest. Most times, standalone pentesters don’t sit at the table where key decisions are made 🤷🤷🤷🤷. Decisions will be pass down to you if your only skill is pen testing 😎 There is a guy asking me what then do cyber people do if they don’t pentest. It’s like saying what do people do in the university if they are not training to be doctors/engineers 🙄🙄🙄🙄. Read again and ask if the question make sense.
