@LegendLuckster @deathbybadger Ideally that's the case. But from OP's tweet and general fantasy discourse here, I get the impression of general aversion towards magic systems. And most of the time, the discourses only focus on Sandersonesque magic system while ignoring other hard magic systems out there.

@Muntilander @deathbybadger That's pretty much how magic systems are treated in any story. They're either told to expand characterization or to explore broader themes.

every time my husband convinces me to watch an anime like Frieren I am sort of shocked how it occupies this complex cultural space of metatextual deconstructionist fantasy meanwhile on my patch of land we are using terms like Magic System and essentially throwing mud

@deathbybadger Personally, I'm not a fan of using magic system as powerscaling and mud flinging discourses either. It could've been so much more than that ✌🏼

@deathbybadger Might be an unpopular opinions, but I think magic system should've been treated like a literary device for themes and narrative. Often this is a commentary of power disparity. Cases in point: • The Fifth Season • Blood Over Bright Haven • Craft Sequence • Witch Hat Atelier

@ReadyPlayerHIM @sighyam Honestly, I love Sanur but the new mall is just a major source of traffic jam Re: Canggu, I once spoke with an urban designer from Brazil and he was surprised with the crazy sprawl and major lack of urban planning there. Not to mention the crazy bules on bike and ripoff cafes.

@Muntilander @sighyam Agree. Sanur also growing and plenty of great spot now. Public transport is still a minus for Bali, everyone travels on motorbike. I honestly don't know how to describe Canggu now, except that it's a vast tourist trap.

@sighyam @ReadyPlayerHIM Denpasar is growing in terms of urban youth cultures. Lots of good local music gigs, coffee shops, and decent if small creative scene. The only things I miss from Jakarta are the international music concerts, the variety of bookshops, and maybe MRT/LRT Avoid Canggu at all costs.

@ReadyPlayerHIM I’m more of a city boy. Should I give Bali a try? :(

@msmk1128 @threenotes_jp "Solfa" cassette was pretty much the OST of my teenage years (I'm ancient lol) so naturally an anime with Yusuke Nakamura-sensei visual style and AKG's OST just drew me in I also really enjoyed "The Night Is Short, Walk On Girl" movie from the same universe

海外の方にちょっと聞いてみたいです。 日本のアニメで好きな作品って何がありますか？ ジャンルも年代もいろいろあるけど、それぞれの国でどんな作品が愛されているのか気になります。 おすすめや思い出の作品があればぜひ教えてほしいです。

@aaajjjtttajtajt @threenotes_jp Gotcha! Thank you for the comprehensive overview. It is surely a big commitment but I'm no stranger to it. Some western fantasy novels like "Wheel of Time" and "Malazan" also have 10+ volumes, and with some volumes exceeding 1000 pages 😅

@Muntilander @threenotes_jp 2019年に出たもので「本編完結」ということになってますが、番外編も本編と呼んでも過言ではないくらいの内容で、今後もシリーズとして番外編を出すとのことなので、「本編完結したから番外編はいいや」とはならず。どこまで続くかは想像できないですね… ちなみに今のところシリーズは15冊出てます。

@aaajjjtttajtajt @threenotes_jp I just found out the English version has reached the 4th volume and 5th is coming this June. I've wishlisted them for now and hoping new volumes will be translated soon. How far do you think it is from the ending?

@Muntilander @threenotes_jp 既にご存知でしたか！詳しい！そしてこんなに知られてて嬉しいです☺️ 確かに、アニメは原作通りではないし、原作にはいないオリジナルキャラクターが出てますね（しかも重要ポジション）。十二国記は原作小説がまだ終わらない（数年に1冊しか新作が出ない）ので、日本でも気長に続編を待つつもりです笑

@aaajjjtttajtajt @threenotes_jp Ooh that takes me back! I also watched a few episodes but abandoned it because I found out they didn't adopt the whole story. I need to pick it up again and look for the English edition of the books

@Muntilander @threenotes_jp ちなみに、守り人シリーズのファンには小野不由美（Fuyumi Ono）先生の小説「十二国記（The Twelve Kingdoms）」も好きだという人が結構沢山います（私もそうです）。こちらもアニメ化されてるので、機会があれば是非視聴してみてください！

@aaajjjtttajtajt @threenotes_jp I think I was almost halfway through "The Beast Player" but I ended up shelving it a few years ago. Maybe I need to pick it up again... I've been curious about "The Deer King" but no streaming available, unfortunately. They have translated the book tho, so I plan to buy it.

@Muntilander @threenotes_jp 上橋先生は元々、文化人類学を専攻していたこともあり、そのあたりは本当に素晴らしいですよね。私も同感です。 獣の奏者（ビースト プレイヤー）も視聴済みでしたか！他にも「鹿の王（The Deer King）」がアニメ映画になってたと思うので、もし配信されていればこちらも是非！確か漫画化もされてます

@aaajjjtttajtajt @threenotes_jp I love Uehashi-sensei's anthropological approach to worldbuilding. Her depiction of tribes, folklore, and traditions is so vivid and fascinating. I also enjoyed Beast Player Erin, although I love Moribito more

@aaajjjtttajtajt @threenotes_jp Yes! Balsa might be my top 5 anime character of all time Spear-wielding protagonists are so rare, so Balsa is special. The series also reminds me of classic Chinese wuxia. I already collected and read both novels. I wish Scholastic would translate the rest of the series 😭
