Recent research suggests that Alzheimer’s disease may not begin in the brain as traditionally believed, but could instead be triggered by inflammation in other parts of the body such as the skin, lungs, or gut. Scientists using genetic analysis have found evidence that immune system activity and chronic inflammation in these areas may start damaging processes many years before memory symptoms appear. This challenges the long-standing view of Alzheimer’s as purely a brain disorder and may explain why many treatments targeting the brain have had limited success. Instead, researchers now propose that the disease could develop gradually through whole-body interactions, where inflammation spreads and eventually affects brain function, highlighting the importance of looking beyond the brain for early prevention and treatment strategies.
