@die_rizzen @BlakkBile I spend a lot of time reading spinoza/ists, and hegel is comically confused over what conatus, attributes, and modes are so it makes most hegelian arguments that bulldoze over fundamental issues like positivity, infinity, or being very annoying

@donaldp1917 @die_rizzen @BlakkBile spinozism works as a sort of anomalous monism a la davidson, Knox Peden has a few good recent articles on this; for hegel you have to argue over the definition of metaphysics and engage in the worst debate ever

@NewSweezyite @BlakkBile Conception of Being as outside thought would make it undialectical. I am not sure that is what you re going for.
Also, this unity is pretty hard to deny considering everything one can point out as an argument against will also be intelligible thought.

This is why dialectic is not separate principles but thought that knows the unity of being and nothing.

@Kali_de_Armas it is except for when it isn't; it's the difference between negative dialectical reason and the speculative - which for hegel is one logical, necessary, positive movement of the dialectic - but the subordination of negativity and it's necessity is what's being contested

"Negation of the negation" is just a definition for the "dialectic." It's basically a synonym in Hegelian jargon. The reason it is so often rejected is because it is so often misinterpreted. Mao's "critique" makes it painfully clear that he has no idea what the term even means.

mao was right in opposing the negation of the negation as a category in a materialist dialectic and somehow adorno, deleuze, althusser and macherey all agree with him on this

It's telling that an overwhelming majority of those critical of Rockhill's book are 1) Western academics; and 2) haven't read the fucking text. They're worse than the worst of my undergraduate students—forming rabidly strong opinions about ideas they haven't read or understand!

@Dubious_Angel Althusser was never anti-dialectics unless you confine "dialectics" to a repetition of hegel's phenomenology; Wood's criticism of althusser is weak, relying on ambiguities in terms like structure, level, "simultaneous expression" and leaves the problems in a more confused state

Ellen Meiskins Wood is the most astute political Marxist critic of Althusser, but also more philosophical historian than analytic (she'd also reject being called an empiricist!)

this is funny given the reaction of anglo marxism to althusser was a hysteric backlash that has today bottomed out in chibber's dullard version of analytical marxism and canned recitation of brennerism, with varying degrees of chauvinism depending on the author
