@RealMolotoff @AkkadSecretary Ive seen uk plugs without switches though? So a means of isolation doesnt neccesarily have to be a switch on a plug
But nothing about that specifies that its for environmental reasons. Just safety and convenience. Im not pulling a plug when the insulation is melting off the cable
English

@NextDefault_ @AkkadSecretary It's a law....
"BS 7671 (the UK's IET Wiring Reg.) requires that every circuit have a means of isolation. Switched sockets satisfy this for plug-in appliances — you can isolate the load without pulling the plug."
Environmentalism+safetyism = down syndrome UK building code

American tourist defeated by the on/off switch
Luna Stratton@lunar_light3
Okay, I think I found my problem. Every outlet has an on/off switch and they're all off. Why? Why is this a thing? Also, where's the stove one? *more confused American noises*
English

@RavenComplex @AkkadSecretary I think the code thing is because a socket outputs 13A and you can have like 33A on a ring main. Lighting typically has its own main for each floor at a substantially lower amperage, and theyre worried someone would plug in a heater into the lighting and start a fire in the wall?
English

@RavenComplex @AkkadSecretary I think our electrical code that says you cant have a light switch tied to an outlet? Idk
Just one of those legacy things that never went away i guess. Some people get really paranoid about electrical fires if they leave it on overnight tho and its more convenient than unplugging
English

@RealMolotoff @AkkadSecretary But also only the uk and its teritories uses this style of plug so its not even 'europe slop'. Its just the uk.
I mean these plugs have been around since the 50s and noone gave a fuck about the costs or the environment back then. I think it just stayed because legacy tbh
English

@RealMolotoff @AkkadSecretary Not really about parasitic draw, just more convenient than pulling plugs. Pretty sure it was so lamps could be turned off, but i think most people dont bother. EXCEPT people seem to think its dangerous to leave it on with nothing plugged in - theres a built in safety so its not
English

@RavenComplex @AkkadSecretary Its not mandated, just most do. Theres no reason you cant have a non-switched one
Im pretty sure it dates back to the dawn of electricity into homes so you could like turn lamps off or something and it just stayed because it means you dont gotta pull the plug
English

@AkkadSecretary You guys have to have all your outlets switched? That's gay as fuck.

@priyatonin Its actually something to do w/ the air lock in the two pools of water. As the bottom bottle fills, it pushes air into the top bottle, pushing water out until the pressure equalises between the two and it stops flowing altogether
I saw a youtube video like 4 years ago about it

@omgsidewalks Honestly i dont even care about 'weekends'. Just give me 3 days off a week so im only working for 4 of them. Even if its 10 hour days, ill take it
Society is so busy on the weekend but dead in the week. I feel like the community would be better with it spread evenly
