On Sunday at @jazzdotorg, it was an absolute thrill to moderate a discussion with two of the most distinguished giants of this music - two giants who also happen to be two of my most beloved adopted big brothers - Wynton Marsalis and Terence Blanchard. I met Wynton when I was 14, Terence when I was 15. Being onstage with them felt like 1987 all over again. 😂 (I know, I know, “Was it recorded?” Maybe….😉) 📸: Gilberto Tadday/JALC
2023, like many other years I believe, has been like a three-band EQ: highs, mids, & lows. We all share a lot of each. One of those three frequencies can be stronger at various times, but at the end of the day, it’s the full bandwidth that matters. Too much high pierces your ears, too much mid sounds wonky, too much low can get muddy. Accept the full bandwidth. A good year is a year that you stay alive with your physical and mental health. Period. One of the reasons I’m writing this is because I had a completely different thing I was going to write before I learned of the death of one of our legends. Mr. Les McCann. In the vernacular of the jazz world, Les was OUT!!!! 🤣🤣🤣 He chose laughter. He chose positivity. He chose shock value 🤣. He chose to make soulful, funky music to make people feel good. In 2024, I certainly wouldn’t suggest that you be “out” (I mean, if that’s your thing…🤷🏾♂️), but I would suggest that more of us choose happiness, positivity and laughter. It comes back to you. When the lows come, you KNOW the highs are coming. When you get too “high”, prepare for a low. And the rest of the time, there’ll be mids. But laugh through it all….if you can. Alright, I’m corny. Happy New Year!!!! 🎆🎊🎈 instagram.com/p/C1i4iaUCium/…
