@supersat @cemaxecuter An image posted further down suggests they're using non-3GPP access, which means connecting to the cellular core via other means. Typically WiFi, but could be some other air interface or even fixed access.

I, like most network engineers of my generation, got into the industry after growing up watching "Track That Packet!". (Weekdays at 10:30am, between "Card Sharks" and "Win, Lose, or Draw!", on NBC.)

@NickvNetworking Another UZ801 owner! I also have a repo about those. I did manage to get QCSuper working on mine like this: ./qcsuper.py --adb --wireshark-live after enabling ADB (which also enabled DIAG, I think) github.com/theXappy/UZ801…

I bought a $10 MiFi Dongle and pulled it apart. It runs full fat Android, without a screen - it's just a regular phone in a USB stick and for $10! Already planning some kind of Rube Golberg mobile load testing setup... nickvsnetworking.com/adventures-wit…

@Gabeuk And how much extra consumers are willing to spend on it / what operators are willing to shell out so their customers can access it. I'm irked by lack of coverage on the train or inside a building far more than I am being in the desert (and wanting to be reachable).

10 years ago we were discussing VoLTE deployments. It's been one of the most challenging, expensive and time consuming features which still does not work seamlessly in 2025 🙄 #3G4G5G

@ScottyBauer1 A536e, Samsung generally (but not always) roll their own IMS stack rather than relying on Qualcomm or MTK, so we generally see the same behavior regardless of who made the baseband.

Handset / baseband manufacturers IMS stacks always come up with new ways to ruin my day. We're seeing certain Samsung phones stops sending RTP mid-call and instead send random unidentified data (Not IPv4/v6) making the UPF unhappy and drops the bearer. nickvsnetworking.com/tales-from-the…

@Digital_Cold Now that's an idea, iirc ROHC is only used on the air interface right? So could be that the eNB is passing the raw ROHC compressed data and chucking it in GTP?

Ok so why does apple still refuse to let watch have a data only eSIM?

@peter_adderton @boostmobile Financially this is a win for EchoStar, but I get the feeling it's not seen that way by the folks who set out to become a 4th MNO, rather than to make a (admittedly not quick) buck on spectrum resale. I'm also not sure what makes this a "Hybrid MVNO" model?

This may be controversial. I actually really believe Ergen wanted to build a 4th network to take it to the big guys, but poor retail leadership, failed brand vision , and confusing go to market strategies ( still continues today ) and not having the right vision for @boostmobile finally caught up to @EchoStar .

@9600 I love the "need doing" part - I setup an E-Carrier system in the shed for much the same "need". Love the cheap access to kit that would have once cost more than my house!

Long list of odd jobs that need doing around the house, so instead I'm concocting a plan to have two DECnet / OSI networks at home, separated by DEC routers, plus Cisco routers providing X.21 interfacing for X.25-over-IP as a simulated PSDN.
