Gagarin’s ‘Vostok-1’ capsule was piloted automatically, as no one back then could have foreseen what human behavior might look like when subjected to extreme conditions. As a last resort, Gagarin was given an envelope with a code for switching to manual control. In order to access the code, the cosmonaut would need to solve a simple arithmetic problem - something that would have been difficult for a person in a state of panic. Ironically, he already knew the code anyway.
