The Patriarch of Georgia solved the demographic problem in Georgia.   In the late 2000s, Georgia was facing a serious demographic problem, with birth rates dropping dramatically. In 2007, Patriarch Ilia II, a figure with huge influence in the country, decided to act practically.  He publicly promised that he would personally baptize every third child (and the next) of every Orthodox family, provided that the parents are married in a religious marriage.  These baptisms are not held individually, but are organized as large group ceremonies at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity (Sameba) in Tbilisi, usually several times a year.  Patriarch Ilia II became the official godfather of the children. Hundreds of babies are baptized simultaneously in each ceremony. The late Patriarch (who passed away in March 2026) had become the godfather of more than 50,000 children in Georgia.  The move is considered by many analysts and journalists as one of the main reasons for the birth "explosion" observed in Georgia in recent years.  For a deeply religious country, having the Patriarch as their child's spiritual father was a supreme honor.
