I truly believe this is one of the worst abuse cases in history. Elisabeth Fritzl was 18 years old when her own father lured her into a sound proof cellar and trapped her there for 24 years. Her father, Josef Fritzl, began building the cellar when she was 15 and was sexually abusing her from the time she was 11. After trapping her in the cells he began raping her almost every day for 24 years. Because of this she ended up being forced to give birth to 7 children while in that room. One child died due to complications and Elisabeth was never given any medical care for the duration of her captivity. It is not known if any of the children suffered from complications as a result of the incest. Her father would have her reenact porn scenes in front of the kids as a way of humiliating her and he would make them dig by hand to enlarge the room as more kids were born. She said it took them years to do. He would also starve them for days and turn off the lights so that they were in complete darkness. Elisabeth taught all her kids to read, write, and took care of them as best as she could. Her mother claimed she didn’t know what her father was doing and that he convinced her she had run away and joined a cult. He took the first 3 babies Elisabeth had and claimed she left them on the porch for her mother and him to raise. Meanwhile she was trapped downstairs with her other children. The cellar was soundproof so the mother never heard her daughter screaming for help all those years. The three children that were raised with the parents upstairs also never knew the truth about who their mother was or the fact that their grandfather was actually their father. This caused them to have a tremendous amount of guilt and mental health issues later in life. Eventually Elisabeth was able to convince her father to take their eldest child to the hospital after she became unconscious. After that she begged her father to allow her to visit their daughter in the hospital which is how she was able to get help. She alerted the doctors immediately what happened and her father was arrested. She told the police she would only cooperate if they could promise that she’d never have to see her father again. Her father was sentenced to life in prison in 2009 and his wife remained married to him until 2012 despite learning what he did to their daughter. It was also discovered that he had raped numerous women years prior and was also suspected of killing a 17 year old girl who resembled Elisabeth. Elisabeth was granted full custody of her 6 children and was given a body guard who eventually became her partner. They live in a town unknown to the public and she has also changed her name so no one can find her. The town is said to be protective of her and the kids and they’re all doing well. There are no current images of her out there and there are zero images of the kids. The most recent update from her care team is that all the kids have been able to build their own lives and adapt to society. Elisabeth has also made tremendous progress and loves the town she’s in and feels safe. Her team said she no longer requires psychiatric treatment and lives a very happy and private life with her family. Her father is still alive and says he wants to be reunited with his family one day. He also claimed he only began raping Elisabeth because he wanted to know what the “forbidden fruit tasted like.” He was diagnosed with dementia in 2024 and was transferred from a psychiatric hospital to a regular prison. His attorney is trying to get him released but the public will never let that happen. The physical and mental trauma he inflicted upon his daughter is beyond anything imaginable. I don’t know how she survived those 24 years locked in that room. She’s a true survivor and I hope she spends the rest of her life in peace with her family.
