Nanoparticles in Sunshine. Look at this image for 5-10 s. Do you see an optical illusion or an unusual shining? This is a 3D pattern of illuminated gold nanospheres. #sciart #scicomm #nanoparticles #opticalillusion #fluorescencefriday #microscopy #education #ScienceArtHub Nanoparticles represent ultrafine particles that usually vary from 1 to 100 nanometers in size and can be of different shape, including spheres, rods, hexagons, cubes, triangles, and tubes. These are undetectable by our eyes and can show a variety of unique physical and chemical phenomena if compared to materials of larger size. Naturally occurring nanoparticles are produced as a result of different meteorological, geological, and biological processes. Atmospheric dust, volcanic ash, fine sand, and even viruses are typical examples. Engineered nanoparticles are widely applied in different areas of nanoscience and nanotechnology. For example, gold nanoparticles are used in bioimaging of tumor cells, drug delivery, sensing and catalysis. Some nanoparticles can also shine and exhibit strong fluorescence. In art, nanoparticles of silica and other inorganic compounds are commonly used in restorations and as paint components. There is also a whole new discipline called NanoArt that explores nanometer scale 3D objects observed by electron microscopy and related scientific techniques to produce images and movies with an artistic appeal toward promoting science and technology to the public. The Kobold-2 nano-probe is a device consisting of a nanocamera mounted on a 13 Å self-guided drone. In its first three missions it explored for some μs a sample of matter whose diameter was approximately 1,5 μm. SMÅLL Corp. recently made available to the public some images.
