Disabled man dies after ICE detains father and caregiver Wael Tarabishi, 30, passed over the weekend of complications from Pompe Disease, a rare condition that required constant medical care. The family is calling for the release of his father and caregiver Maher Tarabishi to attend his sonโs funeral. Diagnosed with Pompe Disease at the age of four, doctors said Wael would likely only live 5-10 more years. Instead, he thrived in the care of his father. After Maherโs detention, Wael experienced a number of health scares. In an interview with @journojudy for BT News in November, Wael said medical professionals often relied on his faher to understand his condition. โEven sometimes doctors ask him, โWhat should we do?'โ "My father is my hero, my hope, my miracle, my motivation, my safe place, my sanity, my best friend, my only friend ... As long as heโs with me, nothing will happen to me. And as long I am with him, nothing else matters. Not a single person knows more about my condition than him," Wael told BT News. Maher Tarabishi, 62, was detained by ICE last October when he appeared at the Dallas ICE office for a scheduled appointment. The Department of Homeland Security has accused Tarabishi of โterroristโ connections to the Palestinian Liberation Organization, a claim the family denies.
