Sansetsu and other Edo-period Japanese painters had likely never even seen a live gibbon in their lives when creating these paintings. Since these animals weren't native to Japan, artists predominantly copied paintings imported from China, especially the works of the 13th-century Chinese monk Muqi. As these copies -- produced by referencing other drawings -- were repeated over generations, the animals' biological realism gradually disappeared.
