I am grateful to three dear friends, Professor Andrea Alu, Professor Albert Polman, and Professor Pino Strangi, for organizing a wonderful workshop on Metamaterials at UPenn last week, on the occasion of my 70th birthday. Many friends, colleagues, collaborators, and some of the alumni from my group participated in this event, which included fascinating scientific talks and great friendship. I am thankful to all the participants. Special thanks to Andrea, Albert, Pino, Ms. Erin Dowling (the event and communication coordinator), and Ms. Danielle Kopicko (the director of our ESE department).

This project spanned several years with a wonderful international team led by Case Western Reserve University and UIUC in collaboration with colleagues from the University of Luxembourg, Marseilles University, and Umeå University, Sweden.

Using advanced techniques like STEM-VEELS and near-field infrared spectroscopy, we probed low-energy excitations and demonstrated how boron doping induces plasmonic behavior through intervalence band transitions. This was a result of a large collaborative effort funded by NSF.

We identified intervalence plasmons in boron-doped diamond—a groundbreaking finding linking hole doping to plasmonic behavior in semiconductors. This opens new doors for quantum technologies. Out today in Nature Communications 👉 nature.com/articles/s4146…
