This striking kosode, a traditional Japanese garment and forerunner of the modern kimono, dates to mid-19th Century, around 1840–1860. Created from fine silk, it showcases detailed hand-painted skeletal motifs, reflecting the high level of craftsmanship and artistic expression associated with Edo-period textile design. The kosode was not just everyday wear it often conveyed cultural themes, seasonal changes, or even elements of folklore.
The eerie skeletal design draws inspiration from Japanese ghost stories, or kaidan, which were immensely popular during the Edo period. These tales often featured spirits, skeletons, and supernatural elements that reflected both entertainment and moral lessons. Wearing garments that referenced ghostly imagery was sometimes linked to theatrical performances, seasonal festivals, or a fascination with the mysterious and macabre.
Now preserved by Kyoto Living Craft House Mumeisha, this kosode serves as both a historical artifact and an artistic statement. It offers a rare glimpse into the fusion of fashion and folklore in 19th-century Japan, where clothing was not just decorative but a meaningful expression of cultural identity and storytelling tradition.

An Iraqi woman dressed in the ceremonial costume of the goddess Ishtar.....
Ishtar is the Akkadian counterpart of the Sumerian goddess Inanna and the West Semitic goddess Astarte. Ancient Mesopotamia, which is centered in modern-day Iraq, is considered the birthplace of civilization. The photograph recreates the attire of Ishtar, who was the goddess of love, war, and fertility in ancient Mesopotamian religion. The ceremonial costume is worn in a museum setting, surrounded by ancient Mesopotamian artifacts, such as a lamassu, a protective deity with a human head and a bull or lion's body.
This powerful photograph recreates the ceremonial attire of Ishtar, the ancient Mesopotamian goddess of love, war, and fertility. Ishtar, also known as Inanna in Sumerian mythology, was one of the most revered deities of early civilization, worshiped in the great cities of Uruk, Nineveh, and Babylon more than four thousand years ago.
The costume shown here draws from archaeological and artistic depictions found on cylinder seals and reliefs, where Ishtar is often portrayed adorned with stars, lions, and wings—symbols of divine authority and cosmic power. Her worship was central to Mesopotamian religion, representing both creation and destruction, passion and chaos.
This modern reconstruction honors Iraq’s deep cultural heritage, linking the present to the birthplace of writing, law, and urban life. It also highlights the ongoing effort of Iraqis to preserve and celebrate their ancient identity after decades of war and looting that have threatened the country’s archaeological legacy.
The goddess Ishtar inspired later figures such as the Phoenician Astarte and the Greek Aphrodite. Her story of descending into the underworld and returning to life is one of the earliest recorded myths of death and rebirth.

This is a rare 16th century Icelandic grimoire ('galdrabók), that contains spells and sigils/staves.
'Galdrastafir', Icelandic magical staves, were visual representations of spells and were used in Icelandic folk magic to invoke luck among other things.
