Jonathan Barnbrook, who designed the artwork for David Bowie's final album ★ (Blackstar), explained its meaning in an interview with Dezeen: "This was a man who was facing his own mortality. The Blackstar symbol [★], rather than writing 'Blackstar,' has as a sort of finality, a darkness, a simplicity, which is a representation of the music... "The idea of mortality is in there, and of course the idea of a black hole sucking in everything, the Big Bang, the start of the universe, if there is an end of the universe. These are things that relate to mortality."

★ ALBUM IS TEN YEARS OLD “We were born upside-down...” Ten years ago today on 8th January 2016, David Bowie released his 28th studio album ★ (Blackstar) on his 69th birthday. Today would have been his 79th birthday. Here follows the text from the post we made back then, which was accompanied by another Jimmy King image from the same session as the one we’ve used today. + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAVID BOWIE AND ★ “That’s the message that I sent...” Why is this man so happy? Is it because it‘s his 69th birthday or that he has released his 28th studio album today and it’s a corker? Who knows, but we’re sure you’ll want to join us in congratulating him on both. Many happy returns of the day to David Bowie and ★ (Fashion fans may like to note that our man is wearing Thom Browne) + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + 📸 Jimmy King #BowieBlackstar #BowieBlackstarAlbum

_ Robert Walser, La Promenade

Umberto Eco, who owned 50,000 books, had this to say about home libraries: “It is foolish to think that you have to read all the books you buy, as it is foolish to criticize those who buy more books than they will ever be able to read. It would be like saying that you should use all the cutlery or glasses or screwdrivers or drill bits you bought before buying new ones. “There are things in life that we need to always have plenty of supplies, even if we will only use a small portion. “If, for example, we consider books as medicine, we understand that it is good to have many at home rather than a few: when you want to feel better, then you go to the ‘medicine closet’ and choose a book. Not a random one, but the right book for that moment. That’s why you should always have a nutrition choice! “Those who buy only one book, read only that one and then get rid of it. They simply apply the consumer mentality to books, that is, they consider them a consumer product, a good. Those who love books know that a book is anything but a commodity.”

The poet’s word is sweet as bird, Romantic’s tale and prose. Of stars above and gentle love And fragrant breeze that blows. But write they not a single jot Of beauty tortured sore. Don’t wonder why such men can lie, For poets are no more.

The Men of Art have lost their heart, They dream within their dreams. Their magic sold for price of gold Amidst a people’s screams. They sketch the moon and capture bloom With genius, so they say. But n’er they sketch the quaking wretch Who lies in Castlereagh.

Happy birthday to the late great Hunter S. Thompson, born on this day in 1937. “Let us toast to animal pleasures, to escapism, to rain on the roof and instant coffee, to unemployment insurance and library cards, to absinthe and good-hearted landlords, to music and warm bodies and contraceptives… and to the “good life”, whatever it is and wherever it happens to be.”
