The discovery of antibiotics. Antibiotics revolutionized medicine. Alexander Fleming who lived between 1881 and 1955 discovered modern day penicillin in 1928, the widespread use of which proved significantly beneficial during wartime. Penicillin is the first antibiotic that was discovered. Antibiotics increased the success rates of surgical procedures. Most world war 2 soldiers survived because of the availability of antibiotics for treating their wounds. Germs cause infections and the only weapons we have against them are antibiotics. The image below shows Alexander Fleming, the man who discovered the first antibiotics.
