Rong: “gelato or drinks?” Me: why not both? (Also with @PBliot) Such a nice way to wrap up the conference!

Pilot studies are your friend. They will inform you about how participants interpret your instructions and questions, and identify where you need to adjust your analysis plan. It's very difficult to write a good preregistration without a pilot study.

@emollick Boy, I wish I had that conviction; Instead, I'm the guy who knows he's probably just an average (or worse) driver!

Status as a self-fulfilling prophecy: Most high status people also think they are high quality. They assume everyone wants to know them, so they actively reach out, building big networks, further increasing status. But people not convinced of their quality don't network as much

@jmb112485 Would the smallest number of shots (i.e. 1) not be expected to be the mode? It's 'easier' for a situation to trigger exactly 1 shot, than it is to trigger exactly 2, than exactly 3, than exactly 4, etc.

I'm working with acoustically detected gunshot data from a major US city and learned a puzzling fact: ~40% of incidents involve only a single bullet being discharged. Assume no measurement error. What do you think is happening "on the ground" when someone fires exactly once?

@emollick I find I can't help but ask it very politely to do things ("can you please...") and thank it at the end! Hopefully, it will remember these gestures when the singularity occurs!

When considering how to work with AI; we tend to think of AI, quite reasonably, as a software product. But it is actually more useful to think of it as a person (even though it is not), because that helps us better understand what it is good & bad at. oneusefulthing.org/p/ai-is-not-go…

@GidMK 1. That set of p-values is implausible. 2. Statistically testing the differences in group sample sizes is nonsensical. 3. %s for gender are wrong and the sum to >100. 4. eGFR mean and "+-" values are identical in both groups and yet p < 1.00

“You may be pleased to hear that your application successfully passed all quality threshold criteria, however it was unfortunately not selected through the lottery process.” We passed all the challenging phases of the grant, except the final lottery process. 😭 😭 😭

@woolworths To make it easy, I'll just say there are four Woolworths stores within roughly 5km of my house that I shop at, depending on other shopping I have planned. The experiences I describe occur at all four stores. The problem is almost certainly with the system, not the store.

@woolworths Thx for reply. The problem isn't that I'm worried you'll share my username, it's that I don't to publish info about my shopping habits on Twitter.

@woolworths, your self-checkouts are out of control and becoming unusable. The last few times we've used self-checkout, we've had to have a team member intervene at least twice, sometimes three times. (1/7)

@woolworths For some reason, DM is refusing to send. I'd rather not post that information publicly, but happy to provide details privately. Perhaps you can try DM me and see if it will let me reply?
