Vandaag heb ik het stuk ‘De Hel van Treblinka’ gelezen van Vasili Grossman. Misschien is ‘stuk’ niet het juiste woord, want het beschrijft de keiharde realiteit: hoe hij de aankomst van de Joden op het nepstation weergeeft, het psychologische proces van de nazi’s om mensen klaar te maken voor de gaskamers, het scheiden van moeders, kinderen, vaders en andere familieleden, en uiteindelijk de waanzinnige en industrieel georganiseerde daad zelf. Eerlijk gezegd kan ik mij niet herinneren ooit zo’n indrukwekkende tekst te hebben gelezen. En dan in de tekst de oproep: “Waarom zou men zoiets beschrijven, waarom moet dit alles herinnerd worden?”, vraagt iemand straks misschien. “Het is de plicht van de schrijver de verschrikkelijke waarheid te vertellen, en het is de burgerplicht van de lezer er kennis van te nemen.” En dat zullen we blijven doen.
