The Biomedical Optics Research Laboratory (BORL) at the University Hospital Zurich & University of Zurich is looking for a PhD candidate to develop life-changing imaging technology for premature and newborn infants!
📌 What's the Project About?
Preterm infants often struggle to regulate brain oxygenation — a problem that can cause brain lesions and lifelong disability. This PhD project aims to build a Near-Infrared Optical Tomography (NIROT) system capable of non-invasively imaging brain oxygenation in neonates in clinical intensive care settings.
Key research activities:
✅ Developing advanced image reconstruction algorithms for NIROT
✅ Implementing forward models (e.g., diffusion equation) & inverse solvers
✅ Applying machine learning approaches (PyTorch / TensorFlow)
✅ Validation on phantoms & clinical data from volunteers and patients
✅ Integration with data from collaborative projects
Funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF) 🇺🇨
In collaboration with EPFL — covering engineering, chip design & advanced optics
🏢 Department
Biomedical Optics Research Laboratory (BORL)
Department of Neonatology, University Hospital Zurich / University of Zurich
💰 Funding & Benefits
✔️ SNF-funded PhD position — full-time (100%)
✔️ Flexible working models (part-time, mobile working, job-sharing options)
✔️ Subsidised meals at UZH cafeterias + Lunch-Check card
✔️ Access to UZH & ETH Zurich Language Centre & continuing education courses
✔️ Childcare support via kihz foundation (UZH & ETH)
✔️ Discounts on carsharing, hardware, software & hotel reservations
✔️ Free flu vaccinations & sports facilities (ASVZ)
✔️ International services & support for non-Swiss candidates
🎓 Who Should Apply?
➡️ Master's in Applied Mathematics, Physics, Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computational Science or related field
➡️ Strong interest in inverse problems & image reconstruction for diffuse optical tomography
➡️ Proficiency in numerical methods (FEM, iterative solvers, regularisation)
➡️ Programming skills in Python and/or MATLAB
➡️ ML frameworks experience (PyTorch or TensorFlow) is a plus
➡️ Experience with time-resolved optical data & Monte Carlo simulations advantageous
➡️ Fluent English required — German is a welcome bonus
📅 Start Date: June 2026 (or by agreement)
