U2’s “The Tears of Things” (2026) draws its title directly from Richard Rohr’s 2025 book The Tears of Things: Prophetic Wisdom for an Age of Outrage. Richard Rohr, a Franciscan friar, remains controversial in many Christian circles for his critique of penal substitutionary atonement—the doctrine that Jesus died as a punished substitute to satisfy divine justice and pay the penalty for humanity’s sins. In The Universal Christ (2019), Rohr contends that this framework casts God as requiring violent blood payment before extending love, portraying a “toxic” image of a petty, retributive deity. In its place, he emphasizes that Jesus’ death reveals God's infinite, participatory love and solidarity with suffering humanity—not a transactional sacrifice to appease wrath or alter an unchanging divine mind. Critics from orthodox perspectives charge this as heretical, arguing it downplays or redefines the biblical claim that Jesus died “for our sins” as a sacrificial payment, thereby undermining core doctrines of redemption, forgiveness, and the cross’s necessity. In The Tears of Things, Rohr centers on the Hebrew prophets (Isaiah, Jeremiah, and others) to unpack themes of grief, lament, vulnerability, the transformation of anger into compassion, and the inherent “tears” woven into existence—what Virgil famously called lacrimae rerum (“tears of things”) in The Aeneid (Book I, line 462). The prophetic insight, as Rohr frames it, is that “all things have tears and all things deserve tears,” fostering non-egocentric awareness, solidarity in suffering, and a movement from rage toward love and nonviolence. He draws extensively on prophetic texts (citing the NRSV), including: Lamentations 1:16 — “For these things I weep; my eyes flow with tears.” Jeremiah 20:8–9 — “Violence and destruction... there is something like a burning fire shut up in my bones; I am weary with holding it in, and I cannot.” (see U2’s “Fire.”) Isaiah 6:8 — “Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?’ And I said, ‘Here am I; send me!’” John 11:35 — “Jesus began to weep.” Through these and other passages, Rohr argues that the prophets perceive the deep sadness/grief embedded in reality as a pathway to compassion, nonviolence, and authentic connection—countering cycles of control, outrage, and domination.
