The Honoured Field Marshall, Born in Northern Ireland - Sir John Greer Dill.
Along with my DUP colleague, Communities NI Minister Gordon Lyons MLA we visited Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia to lay a poppy wreath at the grave of Field Marshal Sir John Greer Dill, the Lurgan-born Ulster-Scot who is credited with establishing the 'Special Relationship' between the UK and USA during the Second World War.
On arrival, we were greeted by Arlington Cemetery and the Color Guard of the Saint Andrew's Society of Washington, DC, comprising UK and US military veterans.
Field Marshal Dill was Chief of the Imperial General Staff (professional head of the British Army) from 1940 to 1941. Subsequently posted to Washington DC as Churchill’s personal representative and Chief of the British Joint Staff Mission, he worked closely with US counterpart General George Marshall to establish what we now call the Special Relationship.
After his death in November 1944, he was buried in Arlington by Joint Resolution of Congress and is the highest ranking non-American to be buried there.
He was later honoured with a mounted statue, unveiled by President Harry S Truman, one of only two at the National Cemetery.
At the unveiling of Dill's statue in Arlington, President Harry Truman said, 'I welcome this opportunity to remind my countrymen that the maintenance of a perfect understanding between the people of Great Britain and the United States is of great importance to the peace of the world - it is of the greatest importance to the peace of the world.
This statue will stand as a memorial not only to a man but to a remarkable Anglo-American relationship that bore fruit in a great victory--a really great victory'.
Our wreath, bearing the crest of Northern Ireland, was supplied by the Oldpark/Cavehill Branch of the Royal British Legion. Thank you.

Northern Ireland has some of Europe’s highest electricity bills… and here’s why:
• We pay more than Britain, the Republic, and a third more than the EU median.
• Nearly half our electricity comes from renewables — yet 1/4 of it can’t even be used.
• Wind farms are paid subsidies whether they produce electricity or are forced to shut down.
• Gas plants stay on for backup, and we all pay for both.
• Marginal pricing system: the most expensive generator sets the price — so cheap renewables are still charged at gas prices.
• Small, isolated grid with few connections — we feel price spikes instantly.
• Politicians push net-zero targets, but you pay the cost, while youth leave and the civil service expands.
Energy is the economy. Affordable electricity isn’t a luxury — it’s a necessity. Enough talk, it’s time politicians start representing the people.

Great Britain <-> Ireland.
No passport is legally required to make the journey by citizens of either country.
But from Wednesday 25 February Aer Lingus follows Ryanair by insisting passengers carry valid passports.
BA still allows travel on alternative ID.

@SimonCalder Although UK to Northern Ireland, will this be compulsory for Aer Lungus Regional flights to/from Belfast City? Asking for my 83 yo mum who currently uses her bus pass to travel to Manchester and back from BHD on a regular basis.
