As an English-speaking Quebecer (100% bilingual), I agree. There shouldโve been a statement in French as well as English, especially given one of the pilots was French. I donโt expect my opinion to be the norm West of Ottawa.
That said, the guy shouldnโt lose his job or feel he needs to resign over it.

There is nothing progressive about this.
The way Canada acts often has more in common with an extremist religious state than a highly progressive one.
Being progressive has less to do with the values that you hold, and more about how you hold them.
Dogmatic black and white values, rites and rituals = regressive
Focus on continually better outcomes = progressive
Air Canada should focus on making less accidents happen. A CEO change over a language issue is probably going to slow that down.
It could take a year to find another competent CEO to lead the organization, delaying how quickly the real issues get fixed.
This is a religious, dogmatic decision that is more about โheresyโ than pragmatic changes.
