@ChaninJeff @BenisonMrs I'm just sharing good resources. Not advocating for a particular model/program. I know lots of folks disagree, but I think there are many good choices and am happy to share as many of them as I can.

I'm not calling the MS situation a miracle and wish some reporters had never made such strong claims. But, the improvements are noteworthy and need careful consideration. I object when people try to ignore that improvement. BTW, if you look at the white and Black NAEP results I posted earlier, you will find that in NAEP Grade 8 Reading MS reduced its white minus Black gap by 6 NAEP Scale Score points between 2013 and 2024. No miracle, but certainly some progress.

@Innes434 @plthomasEdD @TimRasinski1 extra year of study, to students with one less year. We have the same "gains" in Indiana b/c we held back students who are less skilled readers. It doesn't hold water, imo

What you found was an overall comparison of scores for all students. As explained nicely on Pg 32 in the NAEP 2009 Science Report Card (nces.ed.gov/nationsreportc…), that can create misleading impressions due to varying student demographics across the states. That is why the tables below do more apples-to-apples comparisons for the 2 leading racial groups in MS. Note in particular the changes in the number of states scoring statistically significantly higher (significantly higher column) from 2013 to 2024. For whites, it dropped from 43 states scoring higher than MS in 2013 to just 7 in 2024. For Black students, it dropped from 27 out of 42 states with reported scores in 2013 to just 2 states in 2024. Pretty different picture, isn't it?

@plthomasEdD @ReadingForum_Ed @TimRasinski1 This paper claims gains for Mississippi on the NAEP Grade 4 Reading Assessment have not shown in Grade 8 NAEP. That is now incorrect, and has been so for some time. Here's a better picture.
