If Silver announced today that he’s changing the MVP/All-NBA minimum from 65 to 62 (20 games missed max), would anyone object? Just admit you made the number too high and fix it on the fly. Cade missing out on All-NBA would be outrageous.

Since James Borrego took over, the Pelicans are FIRST in the league in rim rate. The gap between them and second place Detroit is greater than the gap between Detroit and 18th place Washington.

Brutal timing with 24 days remaining in the regular season. RE in 2 weeks. Detroit has been the #1 seed all year and could be looking at another early exit. Anyone taking a Cade-less Pistons > the Hawks or Hornets? This likely takes Cade (61 GP) out of All-NBA and MVP voting.

Just in: Detroit Pistons star Cade Cunningham has been diagnosed with a collapsed lung and is expected to miss an extended period of time, sources tell ESPN.

One of my favorite episodes of the year: Top-10 Players in the NBA. It's a @johnhollinger & Duncan and Dunc'd On with @DannyLeroux crossover. Shai or Jokic (or Victor?!?!?) at number 1? Search Dunc'd On or Hollinger in your podcast player.

@BobbyMarks42 It should be noted they are doing Expansion AFTER Lottery reform. Two-Way contracts are really what's enabled teams to throw these G-League lineups out there. Twenty years ago teams still needed to play their guys. Now rosters are large enough that you can field 8 nobodies.

We might want to rethink expansion after looking at some of these scores the past couple of nights. In the past 2 games, Brooklyn has trailed by a combined 60 points at the half.

@sirkingtech @Ballislife Something people don't consider w/ MJ is he had finger surgery in the 98 offseason (severe tendon on a cigar cutter, which gave him nerve damage & affected his ability to palm a ball). He wouldn't have been as good in subsequent seasons. (Also why he wasn't as good w/ Wizards).

KD on MJ: “He could’ve played past 40, too. I would say MJ took off four to five years combined. You give him 300 more games of 30 points a night. That’s not an exaggeration. That’s what he averaged—30! I don’t want to take that away from him when I pass him. I think that’s key for any historian to know that about MJ. It’s cool to still be in that same realm as him but he’s more than a 32,000-point scorer to me.”

As Kevin Durant closes in on Michael Jordan for fifth on the all-time scoring list, I spoke to him for @ringer about the cost of a commitment to greatness, his mentality as a scorer, why MJ "is the standard" & more. theringer.com/2026/03/17/nba…

Pace inflation is a hell of a drug. Wilt’s 50.4 PPG season is one of the most amazing volume seasons ever, but on a per-75 possession basis it ranks 135th all time at 28.5 points per 75. A reminder that raw per-game stats and possession-based stats tell different stories.

⌚️ Damian Lillard's 71 in a game with just 92 scoring opportunities is outrageous. Wilt's 78 in a game with 178 scoring opps is less so. We need to talk about pace inflation: tomthefinder.com/p/the-hidden-c…

Per-possession averages are only tracked back to 1973-74, but Basketball Reference still has pace estimates for teams before then. You can use those to get to an estimate of Wilt Chamberlain's career average for points per 75 possessions. It's 19.4, which would be tied for 218th on the list below. Wilt's raw production is remarkable, but he played against far less athletic and sophisticated defenses. Some of his teams played at an estimated pace of over 130 possessions per game. The fastest-playing team in the league this season is at 105 possessions per game. 30.1 points is 30.1 points. That's his career scoring average, and it's impressive. He averaged 50.4 points in 1961-62. That's still bonkers. Being eras ahead of his peers is a credit to him, not a knock. But the context of his era is too often ignored.

@g_money_stud @michaelgrange @tomhaberstroh Wilt and Russell getting 48 minutes of cardio was nowhere near as intense back then as 48 minutes would be today. 60-year-old Referees run up and down the same court for 48 minutes. That's not the hard part. It's what happens DURING those minutes that is taxing.

@michaelgrange @tomhaberstroh The style of the league was fastbreak whenever you can to create the best scoring opportunity People trying to throw shade at Wilt for being fast as hell and having the stamina to play the entire game at that pace are dullards

@michaelgrange @tomhaberstroh Shot selection in the 60s was god awful. Players were running down court to take the first open 15-footer they found. This was because defenses were packing the paint since there was no 3PT line.

@tomhaberstroh Tom! Great chart. I attend church of /100 possessions. Q: Do you have simple explanation for why there were SO many scoring opps in early '60s? Difference between early 2000s dead ball era and 2020s are pretty clear. But what about then and now? 138 (Wilt's 100) in 48m is nuts.

@Filosofiser @MAdamsStatGuy Thus the main way a player could pad their reb totals and get around the possession math of a 48 minute game is if they were a terrible finisher (like an Andre Drummond).

Bam Adebayo broke math. His 83-point game was 8.5 standard deviations above his career average (or ~1 in 53 quadrillion) Based on career avgs, its like: Patrick Mahomes passing for 915 yards Justin Verlander throwing 214 pitches in a start Wilt Chamberlain grabbing 79 rebounds

@statyxio @itscapitanri @TheNBABase The game at the end of the day is a TV / Entertainment product. That's why there aren't more challenges. Nobody actually wants to see a perfectly refereed basketball game that takes 4 hours to complete.

Donovan Mitchell is calling for the NBA to change the coaches' challenge rule after the Cavs' loss to the Magic: “I’m having a hard time with the rule of once you’ve had two challenges you can’t get any more, especially when you win both... If you’re winning challenges, especially on calls that are very obvious, I think it’s something that should be talked about.” (Via @ChrisFedor)
