"existence of ... presumption of innocence, public participation, the right to counsel, and the speedy-trial guarantee in #Eritrea'n customary laws .. are a testament to a society that upheld human dignity and believed that justice is attained through the due process of law..."

Good Read: The Enduring Wisdom of African Justice: #EritreanCustomaryLaws and the Blueprint for Modern Criminal Law; by Simret Yohannes There were, all in all, over 20 Eritrean Customary Laws for the constellation of different communities in pre-colonial times. The first written law goes back to the 15th century. The modern Civil and Penal Codes which were revised in 2015 have incorporated many of the foundational values and precepts of these Customary Laws. shabait.com/2025/11/18/the…

FUN AND INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT ERITREA. The following animals carry the name Eritrea or a place in Eritrea. -Eritrean Blind Snake (Letheobia erythraea)
. A small, harmless, burrowing snake found only in Eritrea’s highlands (elevations 1,800–2,200 m). It’s a classic example of highland endemism—type locality is Saganeiti, Eritrea, and it hasn’t been recorded anywhere else. -Eritrean Side-necked Turtle (also called Eritrean Helmeted Turtle, Pelomedusa gehafie)
A freshwater turtle known only from Eritrea. It was described in 1835, not seen for almost 100 years, and was rediscovered in 2016 in streams of the Damas River near Ghinda (eastern coastal mountains). Super rare and one of Africa’s most localized turtles. -Eritrean Gazelle (Eudorcas tilonura / Heuglin’s Gazelle) A rare, elegant antelope once thought extinct but rediscovered in Eritrea. It’s one of the most famous "Eritrean-named" mammals. -Eritrean Warthog (Phacochoerus africanus aeliani) A distinctive subspecies of the common warthog found in the Horn of Africa. Subspecies found in Eritrea, Ethiopia, Djibouti, and parts of Somalia. -Eritrean Rock Agama / Eritrean Ridgeback Agama (Agama doriae or Acanthocercus annectans). A colorful lizard first described from Keren in Eritrea. -Eritrean Orangetail Lizard (Philochortus spinalis) — Another striking reptile tied to Eritrea. -Eritrean Butterflyfish (Chaetodon paucifasciatus) — A beautiful Red Sea reef fish often called the Eritrean butterflyfish in local contexts. -A few scorpions named after Eritrea are country endemics (or extremely restricted to it): •Neobuthus eritreaensis •Compsobuthus eritreaensis
(and a couple of other arachnids/beetles described from Eritrean type localities). -Asmara Toad, is a species with a scientific name Bufo asmarae (sometimes placed in the genus Sclerophrys in modern classifications), named after Asmara where it was first discovered.

Arguably, #Eritrea is home to some of the toughest, most battle-hardened military leaders Africa has ever seen, shaped by decades of wars since the 1960s liberation struggle. Their heroism is hard to match, yet they tend to keep a low profile as their reputation speaks louder than any words. Those who rise against them have not lived to recount the encounter. Thank you for your service! 🫡🇪🇷

In 2021 the Islamic Republic of Iran submitted a document MSC 103/9/3/Rev.1 to the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) during its 103rd session (held in 2021). It fell under Agenda item 9: Measures to enhance maritime security in the Red Sea. The following was Eritrea's response; "...Allow me to walk you through the main issue of why the Eritrean Government wishes to address this session. A technically classified “General Cargo” Ship-named SAVIZ, which sails under the Iranian Flag, first appeared on the Red-Sea international territorial waters towards the end of 2016 for a mission that is unknown to the Eritrean Government. The Ship remained anchored close to the Dahlak Archipelago of Eritrea for few years, at times, violating the Eritrean territorial frontiers. Despite multiple incidents of infringement by the Ship, the Government of Eritrea did not opt for a unilateral action against it, with the belief that, doing so might endanger the safety and security of the commercial route which is of great international importance. As a solution, the Eritrean President H.E. Isaias Afewerki wrote an official letter, on the 23rd of February 2020, to the Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Belgium (President of the UNSC at the time), voicing Eritrea’s concerns regarding the intrusive presence of the vessel and calling for legal action by the UNSC. A copy of the same letter was simultaneously sent to H.E. Antonio Guterres, but unfortunately, no reply was given from either of them. In the meantime, it is to be recalled that on the 6th of April 2021, SAVIS was attacked by unknown entities. The attack and subsequent explosion happened inside Eritrea’s territorial waters. In that regard, the Government of the State of Eritrea would like to share its grave concern with this Session that such a unilateral action, inside the Eritrean maritime borders, violates the sovereignty of Eritrea. The Government of Eritrea also rejects any unilateral attack in the international maritime waters as it can compromise the safety of navigation and can create unnecessary security situation which goes contrary to the International Maritime Organization’s safety rules and regulations which is based on smooth and orderly movement of vessels across the world..."

TODAY IN ERITREAN HISTORY ― ❀ 38 years ago today, on March 17, 1988, Eritrean freedom fighters launched their most ambitious military offensive, targeting the 22,000-strong Ethiopian/Derg "Nadew Command" in a decisive push to liberate #Afabet. This operation marked a turning point in the Eritrean War of Independence. The Derg lost 18,000 of its most experienced, heavily armed, and battle-hardened soldiers. Among the prisoners captured were Lt. Col. Afewerki Wassae and three Soviet military advisors who had been assisting the Derg forces. At the end of the operation, the EPLF seized 50 T-54/55 tanks, 100 Ural trucks, a number of BTR-60 armored troop carriers, 122mm D-30 howitzer cannons, BM-21 Grad multiple rocket launchers, and a vast cache of light and heavy weaponry, including 130 mm mortars. The battle inflicted catastrophic losses on the Ethiopian forces, decimating their frontline units and crippling the Nadew Command’s operational capacity. British historian, the late Basil Davidson, hailed the EPLF’s victory at Afabet as “one of the biggest ever scored by any liberation movement anywhere since Dien Bien Phu.” Similarly, Canadian journalist Peter Worthington described it as “the largest battle in Africa since the Second World War,” underscoring the immense strategic and psychological impact this triumph had on the course of Eritrea’s liberation struggle. This victory not only showcased the EPLF’s military skill and organizational strength but also signaled the beginning of the end for the Derg’s attempts to suppress Eritrean independence. The battle of Afabet remains a defining moment in the history of modern African liberation movements.

Successful afternoon at #CSW70 with the #Eritrean Delegation. At the @AfricanUnionUN , the Delegation joined the @AU_CIEFFA & @FAWEAfrica session on inclusive legislative and equitable systems to accelerate girls' education in #Africa. #Eritrea spotlighted its ongoing work on gender inclusivity in education. The Delegation then attended the @UN_Women and Qatar briefing on the UN Gender Equality Acceleration Agenda, delivering an intervention on #Eritrea's historical commitment to gender equality, embedded in national development strategies since independence, as well as the progress shared on #Eritrea's efforts, including @NUEWEritrea initiatives, to reduce harmful practices such as #FGM during Finland’s side event. The Chair’s message of @UN_CSW 70th Session resonated: impact over rhetoric. #Eritrea's record demonstrates that commitment.

OPINTION AND ANALYSIS International Women’s Day 2026: Eritrean Women and Leadership Across Generations By Nahla Valji, UN Resident Coordinator in Eritrea *"...Eritrea’s history demonstrates clearly that women are central to national resilience. Their participation during the liberation struggle reflected a principle later affirmed globally through Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security: sustainable peace requires women’s full and meaningful participation". *"...As UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, I have had the privilege of meeting women who carried Eritrea through conflict and women now shaping its future. The continuity with the past and the resilience and strength derived from it are unmistakable". shabait.com/2026/03/07/int…

President Isaias Afwerki famously authored an EPLF blueprint around 1971 entitled “Who We Are and What are Our Aims and Objectives? ንሕናን ዕላማናን” In that hand written text, he included a passage that reads approximately as follows: “If we choose to rely on ancient history, it does not correspond to the realities of the present century. If we were to go back hundreds of years and attempt to redraw the entire world according to historical claims—dividing it into newly defined states—we would ultimately create an entirely different world composed of new countries.”

Funeral service for Professor Asmerom Legesse A funeral service for Professor Asmerom Legesse was held today at Asmara’s Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery in Asmara in the presence of Ministers, senior Government and PFDJ officials, religious leaders, and family members. Prof. Asmerom was a prominent and illustrious anthropologist who produced important research on various themes during his tenure at the Universities of Harvard, Boston, Northwestern, Chicago, and others. Prof. Asmerom served his country and people in various capacities over the past four decades. These include, among others, serving as Chairman of the U.S. branch of the Eritrean Relief Association from 1984 until independence; publishing well-researched documents on the atrocities perpetrated by the Ethiopian regime against Eritreans and Ethiopians of Eritrean origin in 1998; documenting and exposing extensive gender-based violence committed by the Ethiopian army during its occupation of various areas, particularly in the Senafe sub-zone during the border war; and playing a significant role in foiling attempts to dehumanize Eritrea in 2015 through allegations of human rights violations. Professor Asmerom Legesse passed away on 31 January at the age of 94 in the United States. Expressing deep sorrow over the passing of Prof. Asmerom, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs conveyed its condolences to his family and friends.
