An associate used the word "hope" in a client email. "We hope to have the draft by Friday." I called her into my office. I asked her if we were a law firm or a charity. She stared at her shoes. I told her hope is for ambulance chasers. I made her rewrite the email. "We will deliver the draft by Friday." Then I made her stay until 4 AM on Thursday to ensure it happened. She was exhausted. But she wasn't hopeful. She was certain. That's the product we sell.
