His departure clears the air around a brand he helped badly damage heading into the 2022 federal campaign. It wasn’t all about Morrison. Joyce’s return to the leadership dragged the Coalition further into the cultural mud pit that cost it the suburbs, the cities, and a generation of younger voters. His presence reminded voters of a Trump-style populism, but the dial-up version. And while One Nation can cause trouble on the edges, it doesn’t define the centre, not in the big cities, and not in the regions either.
