0/ Well, I'm having a fucking terrible night. I just heard that fellow professor @JamielSheikh passed away unexpectedly over the weekend of a heart attack. Jamiel was tireless at organizing events in NYC to promote blockchain and AI, and always trying to bring people together.

This past weekend, I had the privilege of visiting @BitcoinEkasi in Mossel Bay, and what an inspiring experience! Bitcoin Ekasi began as a surf school teaching kids from the local township. Thanks to founder Hermann’s discovery of Bitcoin, it has transformed into something extraordinary. Surf coaches are now paid in Bitcoin, and kids earn Bitcoin for attending lessons, encouraging them to save rather than spend. This shift has fostered a long-term mindset and reduced frivolous spending—a powerful example of Bitcoin’s grassroots impact. It’s worth remembering: while many in townships lack bank accounts, most have phones. Opening a Bitcoin wallet requires only a phone and internet connection, unlike traditional banking, which demands proof of address and ID—barriers for many. Bitcoin Ekasi has also tapped into the global Bitcoin community, receiving funding and donations from across the world. Driving through the township, I saw shops proudly accepting Bitcoin, with locals earning small monthly incomes through advertising partnerships with global Bitcoin companies. Luthando, a key leader, has inspired other merchants to adopt Bitcoin, spreading its benefits even further. The ripple effects are undeniable—uplifting the community and providing access to a savings vehicle and a global network of support. Witnessing Bitcoin’s tangible impact on lives has me thinking about how similar initiatives could transform other communities in South Africa and beyond.
