A 13-year-old boy who swam 4km through notoriously shark-prone waters in Western Australia to save his family has been praised by police and called 'superhuman'. The boy, his mother and two siblings were kayaking and ­paddle boarding when they were swept out to sea by strong winds. The alarm was raised only after the boy left his family and tried to paddle back to shore on his kayak. However, the kayak took on water, prompting him to swim the remaining two nautical miles back to shore, totaling a four hour swim. The first two hours he swam with a life jacket on, but he ditched it because he didn't think he would make it in time if he kept it on. Once the teen reached land and raised the alarm, a multi-agency search and rescue operation was mobilized. The 47-year-old mother, her 12-year-old son and daughter, 8, were finally spotted by a rescue helicopter about 8.30pm and rescued.
