I’ve decided to leave OpenAI. Below is the note I shared with my team. Building Sora zero-to-one with you all has been the honor and adventure of a lifetime. As this team knows well, one of the best parts of working on video is that you can see the scaling behavior with your own eyes, and there have been a lot of oh-shit moments over the years. About a month into Sora, way back when this was just a tiny two-man effort, we saw a sample where a land shark swam by a bunch of intricate cacti in a desert (it was a weird prompt), and the details of each cactus were perfectly preserved once the shark passed. We had never seen object permanence like this in any video model. That’s when we knew we were onto something. It’s amazing how much the Overton window has shifted on video models. OpenAI has a high tolerance for crazy moonshots, but even back in July 2023 there was a ton of skepticism that high-fidelity 1080p multi-shot generation was achievable within a year given the state of video in the broader industry. We managed to get there 7 months later. While the original Sora ignited a huge amount of investment in video across the industry, it took the next generation of models with Sora 2 for the broader public to understand the transformation happening. I’m proud of all the sleepless nights before and after the launch this team endured in order to deploy the technology in a responsible way and help steer societal norms. I am immensely grateful to Sam, Mark, Aditya and Jakub for fostering a research environment that allowed us to pursue ideas off-the-beaten path from the company’s mainline roadmap. It’s tempting in life to mode collapse to the most important thing, but cultivating entropy is the only way for a research lab to thrive long-term, and Sam deeply understands this. Sora was a project that could not have happened anywhere but OpenAI, and I will always deeply love this place for that. I’m going to miss this team a lot, but there are great things on the horizon for all of you. I will always be in your guys’ corner cheering you on. Love, Bill

This is the first time I've ever seen an LLM operate a GUI as fast as a person, and it's surreal.

Codex can learn from experience and proactively suggest things it can do for you. It now has an in-app browser, many new plugins, and so much more.

Lots of major improvements to Codex! Computer use is a real update for me; it feels even more useful than I expected. It can use all of the apps on your Mac, in parallel and without interfering with your direct work.

What happened to Sam Altman and his family is really awful. It is hard to reconcile his call to “de-escalate the rhetoric and tactics” with his implication that a piece of critical journalism (Ronan Farrow and Andrew Marantz’s New Yorker article, presumably) was responsible for this.

TBPN has been acquired by OpenAI! The show is staying the same and we’ll continue to go live at 11am pacific every weekday. This is a full circle moment for me as I’ve worked with @sama for well over a decade. He funded my first company in 2013. Then helped us fix a serious logjam during a critical funding round a few years later. When I took my second company through YC, he was president at the time, and then when I joined Founders Fund, the first deal I saw in motion was the post-ChatGPT round in late 2022. And as we started growing TBPN last year, he was the very first lab lead to join the show. Thank you to everyone that has been a part of TBPN until now. The last year has been the most fun and rewarding part of my career and we’re excited to have more resources than ever going forward.

TBPN is my favorite tech show. We want them to keep that going and for them to do what they do so well. I don't expect them to go any easier on us, am sure I'll do my part to help enable that with occasional stupid decisions.

The coolest meeting I had this week with was Paul, who used ChatGPT and other LLMs to create an mRNA vaccine protocol to save his dog Rosie. It is amazing story. "The chat bots empowered me as an individual to act with the power of a research institute - planning, education, troubleshooting, compliance, and yes, real scientific design work in converting genomic data to a vaccine prescription and designing the treatment protocol around it. But they worked alongside humans at every step. The combination is what made it possible." It immediately got me thinking "this should be a company". Also, Paul is an extraordinary guy. This should be easy to do, but it is not yet.
