I was using ChatGPT for legal advice and it decided to completely hallucinate some preposterous nonsense about how growing wheat to use on my own farm somehow constitutes interstate commerce

One thing I love is that when ChatGPT grades a criminal appellate brief, it will be like "great job slight chance of success!"

Someone recently told me that law firms are recruiting earlier than ever. "Firms are recruiting 1L students before they even finish their first semester." On one hand... I love to hear that the job market is strong. On the other hand... it feels a little unusual. If firms are making decisions that early, what are they really evaluating? Undergraduate majors? GPAs? Why not extend offers to college juniors who are still studying for the LSAT? I'm not criticizing the practice... With resources, a plan, and proper training channels... this puts certain firms at a major advantage to secure top talent before the rush starts during the typical recruitment cycle. That said... recruiting this early makes me wonder how firms are defining potential, and whether students are being evaluated on who they are or simply who they haven't yet had the time to become?

@JTAlexander_ I went to a top law school. I was an associate at a Top 50 law firm. The ABA permits a "+" or "-" based on class participation. That is huge. Yes, the professors have a lot of contacts that can make or break you. You are either in the Woke or out.

We need to have a serious national conversation about how to strip thousands to millions of people of their law licenses. This is one of the most comically absurd I've seen. Its like a Key & Peele skit. Judge: As a young Black man, you didn't really have opportunities. Convict: Yes, I did. Judge: And you didn't really know what you were doing. Convict: No, I did. Really, I did. Why y'all keep saying that? Judge: And you have such a regret for your actions. Convict: Nah, that sh*t was fun, for real. Can I do it again? Judge: Such a kind young man. Convict: I'd do it again, right now. Where she at? Can I r*pe you too? Judge: Just such a misunderstood creature. Convict: I just love r*ping and kidnapping people. Judge: So touching. Convict: I can't wait to start r*ping people in prison. Judge: I'm really looking forward to seeing your rehabilitation. Convict: I'm really looking forward to them booty cheeks.

Anyone who interacts with Nathan knows he's a phenomenal deal lawyer. And there are tons of stories just like his. I am the first lawyer in my family. I went to the only law school I applied to (spoiler: not T14). Got decent grades in law school but opted out of the extracurriculars because they were all litigation-focused. I knew I didn't want to be a litigator. Instead, I spent my extra time working at a small securities and M&A firm during my 1L-3L years. I couldn't list law review on my resume, but I had drafted an IPO prospectus before the first round of OCIs. I may not have had the best grade in Crim Pro, but it's because I was closing a PubCo Reverse Merger the same week as the final. My resume has very little flash. It's mostly employers and achievements that you've never heard of. It even includes a brief stint doing family law at a no-name firm while I was in between jobs. I've gotten offers from large firms before, but on a blind application, I probably wouldn't make it past the initial screening. And yet I regularly go toe-to-toe with AmLaw 20 firms on $50,000,000 deals without breaking a sweat. I can explain basic M&A concepts so simply that my 6-year-old would understand on one call, and jump into a heated negotiation of complex terms on the next. Gone are the days of getting top-tier legal representation only from name-brand firms and schools. There are lots of us who have chosen a different route, but are every bit as competent as anyone you put us up against. And it seems like we've somehow all found each other on this strange corner of the internet 😅

Didn’t go to a T14 law school. Was Editor in Chief of Law Review. Top 4 in my class. Still not “credentialed enough” for some people to want to work with me. Some people worship schools. Others build careers. (P.S. I’ve run more deals from start to close than many lawyers with far more “elite” academic pedigrees)

@CarlHigbie Sweet bodycam. Sweet, sweet bodycam. The Left screamed for bodycams. They got it. Now, bodycam footage keeps exonerating the officers. This video is fairly conclusive.

@DaveKilloran They should standardize the LSAT so that it can be a reliable prediction of Law School Success.

BREAKING: Some LSAT RC Sections Do Not Have Comparative Passages There have been reports today of LSAT takers not receiving a comparative reading passage (the two passages on the same topic) in their scored RC section. They are not lying. I just spoke to LSAC, and they have determined there is no difficulty or scoring difference in having these passages, and so some test takers will get them and some won't. It doesn't mean anything if you do or do not receive one. This is a permanent change and will happen going forward as well. There was no announcement posted beforehand for some reason (would have been nice, right?). I'll try to find out why. In the meantime, if you haven't taken the LSAT yet, don't be surprised if you get just four single passages in a section.

prediction markets will replace having a job. i want someone to pay me $100k salary. i make a prediction market about whether someone will deliver a six figure job to my computer (must be remote) and load $99.9k into "no". a guy with a laptop sees it and hires me for $100k. before signing me, he bets yes. he hires me. the market resolves to "yes" and he gets $99.9k and I have a six figure salary. rest in peace employers.

prediction markets will replace buying stuff. i want someone to bring kiwis to my house. i make a prediction market about whether someone will deliver 4 kiwis to my doorstep and load $15 into "no". a guy with an ebike sees it and picks up some kiwis. before dropping them off on my doorstep, he bets yes. he drops them off. the market resolves to "yes" and he gets $15. rest in peace, amazon, doordash, ubereats, etc.

Here’s an example of a positive externality of liquid prediction markets: Software engineers & truck drivers today are at meaningful risk of being automated into obsolescence, but they have no way to price that risk & hedge against it. Prediction markets fix this

I should probably do a thread on this-- it's niche to lawyers, so be forewarned. But I am truly ashamed of my profession that so many lawyers have filed AI written briefs with fake citations. Indeed, I think this indicates a much deeper moral rot that people even realize.
