Most people worry about how powerful AI models are. Fewer ask a more basic question: how trustworthy is the data they learn from?
As models increasingly train on synthetic outputs, feedback loops start to form. Quality doesn’t always improve. Sometimes it drifts. In worse cases, it can be intentionally manipulated. Data poisoning isn’t theoretical anymore, it targets the training pipeline itself.
Traditional systems don’t handle this well. Centralized pipelines scale, but they’re opaque. You don’t see where data comes from or how it’s validated. On the other side, open systems allow contributions from anyone, but struggle to enforce trust without adding heavy friction.
Projects like Perle try to approach this differently. The idea is to treat data as something with provenance, human verification, and auditability. Contributors submit and validate datasets, build reputation over time, and that reputation influences their role in the system. In theory, it creates a feedback loop where better actors produce better data.
But this design has trade-offs. Human verification is expensive and slow. Reputation systems take time to mature and can introduce bias. On-chain tracking adds complexity that many users may not want to deal with.
This likely fits environments where data integrity matters more than speed. Less so for casual or low-stakes use.
If AI keeps compounding on user-generated data, the real question may not be how intelligent the model is, but whether the data behind it can still be trusted.
